Don stepped onto the deck a couple days ago, then immediately poked his head back inside and said, "Grab your camera." Whenever he says that, I know it's something good. I grabbed my camera and this is what I saw.
Elk. Lots of elk. Elk in abundance.
They hung around that distant pasture all afternoon: Lounging, grazing, browsing, sunning.
Because they were moving in and out of sight, I couldn't get an exact head count, but there were at least 30.
By afternoon, pretty much the whole herd was laying in the wintery sunlight, chewing their cud.
Cool, eh?

Very cool! Do y'all hunt and/or eat elk meat? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteNope, we've never been hunters. No need to hunt when we raise our own beef.

I have a yard smack full of fat, copper bellied birds with yellow beaks and dark backs. Looks like a flock landed! If I'd known I'd have thrown out a bunch of scratch for them!
ReplyDeleteThe warm spell got grasses and clovers growing. Lots of little green things with tiny seed heads, or buds getting ready to bloom. My chickens love that stuff , so it's probably what this flock is feasting on.
I did actually seed my yard with stuff that grows into chicken feed a couple years ago. I'd forgotten, but it cuts easily and there are always little seed heads going on. I'm going to seed everywhere possible this year. Obviously the birds all love it and it's probably better and cheaper than packaged bird feed. Fresh buffet style.
Cars riding by and birds are busy eating, not flying away!
Can't beat the scenery living in the country!
"Cool" is right on! A real gas, far out and outta sight. Totally groovy.
ReplyDeleteYou should know that I struggled a bit to remember those words from my teenage years. :-(
Absolutely breathtaking! Thank you for sharing your pics!
