Podcast with Mother Earth News

For years, I worked with a wonderful editor for such magazines as Backyard Beekeeping and Goat Journal. Then last year there was something of a shakeup at Ogden Publications (the umbrella organization), and this particular editor also took on the responsibilities of editing Mother Earth News.

Mother Earth News! I've wanted to write for that magazine since forever. I gave the editor a few months to settle into her new role, then sent an article on spec. She accepted it, but warned me that due to a backlog of articles (apparently everyone wants to write for Mother Earth News) it might not see print for a year or more.

That was fine, and next thing I know the editor had several assignments for me – not for the print version of the magazine (at least not yet), but for the website. These articles may take a while to show up (again, there's a backlog), but I'm honored to play a small part of this venerable publication.

Then about a month ago I got an email asking if I'd be interested in participating in a podcast. You bet! The interview (on the subject of hatching mixed birds) took place two weeks ago. It went live a couple days ago. Feel free to click on the link and listen.

Listen to my podcast!

The incomparable Tim Young, aka Self-Sufficient Man, is launching a new venture this week: podcasts.

Here's his announcement:

If you dream of starting a small farm, becoming a modern homesteader, or just long for the simple life, I’ve got some exciting news.

I've been thinking of creating a podcast for a long time -- well over a year. And now, it’s here: the Self-Sufficient Life Podcast!

What's it About?
Lots of people would like to opt-out of the rat race and become more self-sufficient, but they all face a big hurdle: How can they afford to take the leap?

Each episode of Self-Sufficient Life features an inspiring person who has opted out of the rat race and found ways to earn money living more self-sufficiently.

There's no Podcast Like it!
But it’s not just an interview show ... it’s a narrated one-hour podcast, where I share the guest’s story in their words and mine, set against a background of music.

In a way it’s similar to narrative podcasts like This American Life, because in Self-Sufficient Life, I create and narrate stories.

What kind of stories?
Stories of people who figured out how to opt out of the rat race and earn money through sustainable farming, cheese & soap making, pastured livestock and other “traditional” farming enterprises.

But I also feature insightful stories of innovative modern homesteaders. Those who earn money through online marketing, podcasting, YouTube channels, essential oils, authoring Kindle books, selling online courses, blogging and other “non-traditional” ways.

It’s fun, inspiring, and will give you lots of ideas on how to become more self-sufficient, whether you’re in suburbia or in the country.

I've already recorded a bunch of episodes, so get ready to tune in starting September 16, 2016.

And then, get ready to opt-out today!

Tim interviewed me a few weeks ago. He gave (I think) a very clever name to my podcast: The traffic jam that sparked a rural revolution.

You can listen to it here.

Prepper Recon podcast interview

Here's a podcast interview I recently did with Mark Goodwin of the Prepper Recon on the subject of self-sufficiency.

Prepper Recon is a cool beans site with excellent preparedness info, including podcasts, gear, fiction, and other goodies. Well worth checking out. In fact, Mark impressed me so much that I featured him in an upcoming Backwoods Home Magazine article I just submitted.

Enjoy!

Venturing into podcasts

Guess what -- I'm trying a new venture!

In July I was contacted by Lisa Bedford (The Survival Mom) and asked to join her team of prepper women on Survival Mom Radio Network doing podcasts. She and Don both sweet-talked me into it.

So here I am, venturing into unknown territory.

The podcasts can be found here and will be available every Thursday.

Lisa has assembled a broad team of like-minded women discussing such subjects as preparedness, homesteading, growing and preserving food, home, family, and healthy living. Check out this link to see all the hosts. You can listen to some of the other podcasts these talented women have recorded.

There's also a spiffy "grand giveaway" to celebrate the successful launch of SurvivalMom Radio, so click here to check out specifics.

Wish me luck as I wobble my way into the world of radio!
