We've had a couple of city folks visiting us lately: a pair of pigeons.
We've never seen pigeons around here before, but suddenly these two showed up and have been hanging around the barn and on the roof of the house.
In fact they've started building a nest in the rafters of the barn.
Pigeons are rare to the point of nonexistent in rural areas, so why these two should suddenly show up and show an inclination to nest in our barn is anyone's guess.
We've decided they're prepper pigeons and are building a rural bugout. Y'know, just in case.
I dunno, call me crazy, but I suspect the explanation involves "G. W. Bush" and "melting polar ice caps".

We used to call pigeons "rats with wings", so does this mean the rats are leaving the sinking ship?
ReplyDeleteI live 25 miles from the nearest town of any size and we've always had pigeons nesting in our barn. All of the neighboring farms have them too. At first they were a novelty. Now their population has grown and our barn loft looks like a pigeon outhouse.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't let them get too comfortable, they multiple like rabbits and are dirty bothersome birds
ReplyDeleteAgree. They are "pretty" to look at, but make a dirty nasty mess of your hay storage, and anything else below. As a kid growing up on the farm, I heard my dad complain more about pigeon mess than mice or rats in the barn.
DeleteThe pigeons look very healthy to be wild. Maybe someone released them cause they couldn't afford to feed them . I suspect they won't be around long with the Hawk population! Are they banded?
ReplyDeleteStrange, I've only seen them in city areas too.
ReplyDeletePatrice, Your photos are always so beautiful! Would you be willing to tell what kind of camera you use. I'm looking for a new one. (I know you are very busy now, if you cannot reply.) Thank-you cyrus11188@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteIt's a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS19 with 20x zoom (otherwise known as a Costco Special, LOL). It's pocket size and I literally carry it almost every time I set foot outside, my logic being you never know when a nice photo op will present itself.

Here in Minnesota we frequently see them in fairly large numbers on farms. They love barns. Boy, they sure make a mess over everything!
ReplyDeletePerhaps Pigeon Pie is on the menu, Patrice?
ReplyDeleteDear Ms Patrice, Thank you so much for the chukle! I do so love to read your Blog and admire the beautiful photo's you show. May God Bless and keep you and your family safe.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up, we always had pigeons in our barn. Dirty little suckers! But all the different colors were pretty.
ReplyDeleteWe have four living in our barn this year. First time that's ever happened here. Apparently, they like the barn swallows neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteWe have a neighbor who raises the every morning he lets them out they fly to our house eat up all the chicken food we throw out and fly on. at first my hubby thought they were kind of neat, after going through double the amount of chicken scratch the last few months he is rethinking...
