Right now the wheat field is a soggy boggy mess.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think. I mean, everything around us is a soggy boggy mess, including the winter wheat fields of commercial farmers.
Winter wheat, if you remember, is planted in the fall, goes dormant over the winter, and then re-grows in the spring for harvest in the summer (July or August). Our trouble is, since we've never grown wheat before, we don't know if we planted in an area that's too level and we drowned the wheat, or if it will spring back and grow once things warm up.
I'll keep you posted.
It is unfortunate that the weather is not going to cooperate just now. You will be able to grow wheat to your hearts content. Just wait and keep trying. Consider the suffering of the farmers during the dust bowl. That was terrible yet some of them persisted till the bitter end. God can deliver you after you have gone through the refining fire. America is going into the fire.
ReplyDeleteYours looks better than mine. I'm sure I planted too late. Then the geese decided to graze and fertilize. Sometimes I have to just jump in and figure out what I did wrong later. (Note to self-Not a good marriage plan!)

ReplyDeleteHere is western Pennsylvania it's always wet.
Often the wheat lays in soggy ground during the late winter & early spring. Seems to do no harm as long as the new wheat doesn't get too much standing water for too long and drown.
Can't wait to see how you & Don harvest and thresh it.
The growing is easy....it's the threshing & winnowing is that's the tricky part.
A video would be worth it's weight in gold!
A big fan, tarps, baseball bats and borrowed neighbor kids going at it would be a homestead YouTube sensation!
