Twenty years ago today

Twenty years ago today I did the best thing of my life: I married my husband.

Yes it's true: today is our 20th anniversary.

As is not unusual on our anniversary, we're not together. We're doing stuff that keeps us apart for the day. We have no plans to do anything special. In general, we're not "celebrating" people.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t cherish every day with this wonderful man I married, and I thank God for bringing him into my life.

I remember getting teased (in a good-natured way) by friends and coworkers when we first married because we were so incredibly joined at the hip. It’s astounding how much our interests dovetailed back then. People assumed the glow would fade, that we would drift apart and pursue our own interests to the detriment of our marriage. Perhaps children or monetary stresses would pull us apart, as it does with so many couples.

But it hasn't. It's pulled us closer together. Our interests continue to dovetail. By "dovetail" I don't mean we're both interested in exactly the same things. What I mean is, our interests complement each other. We support each other. We offer comfort when something goes wrong and praise when something goes right.

Since of course no one knows what the future may bring or for how many years we will be blessed, I will offer here my love and gratitude for my dear and wonderful husband, Don. I love you, honey!

  1. My husband and I also celebrated twenty years on the 12th of this month. It seemed all the same things were true for us, no one expected us to be together this long. We didn't do anything special, he actually had to work for three days. But we definately hope to celebrate many more, Lord's willing.

  6. This August I and my husband will celebrate 40 yrs together. We had nothing in common with each other in those early days, different music preferences, different movies, he was a neat freak, I was a bit of a clutter bug, He was a sharp dresser, I was a hippie.
You know what? Not a thing has changed. Well, he's a little less of a neat freak, I'm a tiny bit more organized. At 80 yrs old, he's still a sharp dresser, I'm still a hippie. The secret to our longevity? Don't sweat it. I don't care if he's asleep on the couch by 9pm, he doesn't care if I watch Aliens AGAIN. I don't mind if he puts things away before I'm done with them, he doesn't mind when it takes me a week to be done with things.
Don't try to "fix" people you love into some image of what YOU want, just love them.
I hope you have many, many more years of adoration between you.

  10. Congratulations! My wife and I have used a similar analogy in that we are like puzzle pieces that fit together rather than exact duplicates. We have also been apart for many anniversaries and other special occasions. We just move them and celebrate when we can be together. We completed 28 years last October.

  11. Congratulations! You got married the very same day my husband and I did twenty years ago. We live over in northwestern Montana. He's been reading your blog for a while and now he's got me hooked on it. I only wish my garden were as big as yours is.
