Totally innocent, eh? At least that's the justification used by the mothers and instructors at a dance studio in England where little girls as young as three years old are learning to pole dance.
But don't worry, the moves are totally innocent. The classes merely serve to keep youngsters fit and boost their (cough) "self esteem."
The instructor said "she started the classes six months ago because of demand from the children of mothers she teaches to pole dance."
The sad part is she's undoubtedly right. Just like with all the other horribly sexualized options for girls out there -- clothing, makeup, music, games -- these things don't spring from a vacuum. There is a demand for them. Parents are the ones who buy the clothes, makeup, music, and games that transform their sweet innocent girls into miniature "prosti-tots." And the scary part is, they see no wrong in it.
Pole dancing for toddlers is just an extension of that.
The instructor continues, "They [the children] wanted to join in because it is such fun. There is nothing sexual about it. I am trying to remove the stigma from pole dancing and show that it actually helps children keep fit and learn balance, much like gym classes. Nothing has meaning apart from the meaning someone attaches to it." [emphasis sadded]
Sorry, maybe I'm missing here, but pole dancing is a firmly-established dance form in sleazy adult environments. Don't accuse me of making up the connection. It's already there.
Perhaps rather defensively, the instructor ended the interview with the words, "I'm not a scumbag."
In that respect she's partially right. The parents are just as bad as she is.
