That's a lotta egg

Here's a fascinating little Youtube link about a huge chicken egg.

Apparently this guy got an enormous egg from his backyard hens. He wondered how many yolks it might have, so he had his wife videotape opening it.

Over six ounces -- getting up toward half a pound.

Cracking the egg...

Now here's a surprise! A fully-formed egg within an egg!

I'm so glad this was video-taped, or I wouldn't have believed it.

  1. That poor hen! Ouch....I'd be checking my hens for damage! That's something though to see the egg within the egg. I'd like to ask him what kind of super chow is he feeding his girls!

My Ethel, a RR also often makes humongous eggs, but not one inside the other! She is an older hen and sometimes she lays 'rubber eggs' - no hard shell, just a membrane with a yolk. When you pick them up, they jiggle like jello! Sometimes there is an egg shell but it is empty. She is a pet, so 'ol Ethel will live out her days in comfort and not have to worry about the soup pot!

  4. Wow, what's the word for constipation of the oviduct? The inside egg much have gotten stuck and the other formed around it. Fascinating! Thanks for sharing. When I was young my mom showed me how to cut up a whole chicken, I can't remember if it was one of ours from the backyard, or one she had bought, but inside was a whole string of forming eggs. My first science lesson.

  5. Ouch! Kinda like giving birth to twins . . . both at the same time!

Growing up it was not unusual to get some double yokers, some as large as duck and a few goose eggs.

Never saw an egg shell w/i an egg though. Thanks for sharing.
