Snark du jour

Looks like I have a self-appointed critic. This just came through as a comment:

Someone should send the health department to your kitchen and condemn it. Your floor is filthy, your blender is filthy and disgusting. You stove is dirty and filthy. I can't believe you have a dog so close to your food. Get dog hairs in the food much????

And all you people ate that crap?

DISGUSTING! You should be ashamed of yourself.

  1. Sometimes jealousy rears it's head as anger.

Perhaps someone is really aching to live the life that you are and just can't summon the courage to do it. Perhaps they are covering up the disappointment with anger.

I think your kitchen looks just fine.

BTW - it has been proven that children who are raised in "antiseptic" environments often end up with severe allergies and other health problems later in life. I love my kids so I make sure to keep a little hair and dust around to keep them healthy. ;)

  3. Obviously they don't do for themselves, No kitchen can stay perfect when you live and work in it to this extent!
I've seen photos of your kitchen and its generally spotless.
Guess that is one less person you have to worry about showing up at your door*while they wait in line at the fast food place to have power back*

You should see MY kitchen floor after I process and can 400 lbs of apples, hahahahaha.

  7. I'm guessing they commented anonymous because they don't have the nerve to post their name. We live on a small (tiny) homestead and between carrying in firewood, dogs and cats going in and out, and husband and I bringing dirt in on our boots its near impossible to keep our floors clean. They get swept first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Rest of the time forget about it. Your kitchen is a lot cleaner than mine when I am baking. I wouldn't even give the person a second thought. They aren't worth it.

  8. I "walked" my young neighbor through canning tomatoes for the first time over the phone, HOURS later an exhausted canner called back to ask if it was normal to have to clean the kitchen floor with a shovel!!!Some people watch those cooking shows on TV and confuse them with real life.!!!!!!

  12. Patrice,
I'm sorry for the crap you have to put up with, on a regular basis.
I'm sorry that by being a HUGE blessing to your regular readers & sharing the personal intricacies of your life, you also allow yourself to become vulnerable to personal attacks.
I'm sorry that someone would have the time, energy or inclination to want to pelt you with hurtful words like that....especially in the face of ALL you offer to your readers.
I am in awe and in envy, of all you accomplish on a regular basis and of how much DELICIOUS, LOVINGLY, made food you prepare and store for your family! YOU are an AMAZING INSPIRATION & I wish I could do, half of what you do!
Please dont let this petty attack, penetrate your spirit or make you doubt for an instant, the blessing you are to your family & all of your faithful readers!!!! (Though I know you are much too strong & fearless, for that!) You keep doing exactly what you're doing and know, we value, YOU, greatly!!!!

    Blessings,

As my mom used to say of whatever she prepared, "If you don't like it, don't eat it." (of course that meant no food in my case...)

I know you'll keep a record of this anonymous complainer so we won't make the mistake of ever taking it camping or expecting it to help with chores. Reckon it can build a one match fire? Do you think it knows where groceries come from?

  15. This wasn't the only comment on your strawberry pie post that mentioned cleanliness. It really isn't a good idea to show a big hairy dog in the kitchen; this comment was however quite snarky. Not all people are pet/animal people and don't understand that pet owner's are not sickened by their animals; our animals are just another family member. When I want to post pictures of what I'm cooking, but don't want to show that I have dirty dishes in the sink, I make sure to take a close up; that way no one can see what is going on in the back ground. Delicious home cooked food is always ready for a close up anyway. :)

  16. Yes this person obviously is a little city person because when you live in a rural area there is no way everything is going to be spotless I use to be a fanatic about clean till I moved to the country there is no way you can keep up with it all, as someone commented above yours is way cleaner then mine and I try to keep up but with all the canning cooking butchering and everyone in and out all the time it is a full time job plus all the other things that have to be done. So don’t worry about what the trolls say they obviously have no life.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'd eat from your kitchen any day. Especially strawberry pie. As a mom with two kids under 4 and one very loved pup, I find dog hair everywhere. I'm a bit of a neat freak. Doesn't matter how many times I sweep, dust, vacuum or mop. I'm pulling dog hair out from between my kids' toes, fingers and yes I find it in their mouths too. It used to freak me out, but I had to get over it since I haven't found any way to completely prevent it besides getting rid of my "furbaby". Wasn't there some big study being passed around that found that kids raised in a home with a dog had healthier immune systems than those that didn't?

Everyone has their own standards of living and, shockingly, the vast majority of people survive coexisting with a little organic matter.

  18. Anyone that has been reading Patrice's blog knows that she has dogs. Everyone in the world's dogs roam the kitchen.....I have two cats and while one is the "ideal" 14 yr old cat the other is 2 and can't tear herself away from the kitchen window! Everyone that reads the blog also knows who she is and what she stands for and what type of life she lives. If anyone is bothered let them not read. Living in the country, accomplishing what she does is amazing, a true inspiration. I would rather see that you are a real mom- WITH THE PICTURES THAT YOU SHOW DURING THE PROCESS AND AFTER- than to know you a faking it for the cameras! and this is coming from a woman that was raised with the Mommy Dearest of Cleanliness! I am cursed with OCD cleaning but I just went and looked at my crockpot (way overused) and there are stains and my coffepot maker needs a cleaning too! Please don't change a thing Patrice!

  19. I don't like animals in the house and certainly not in the kitchen. But, I am aware that there are people who let cats walk on the counters and dogs eat from food on the counter. It grosses me out, but I still eat the food prepared under these conditions. I would never threaten to call the Health Dept to anyone because of the kitchen in a blogger's home.

Maybe I had better go spiff up the kitchen and remove the chicken feathers from the floor that I inevitably walk into the house. Oh, NO! I have a huge spider web that I allow to remain because the fruit flies are good spider food. Thanks, spider. If company is coming, I will vacuum it out, just like I did the spider home behind the microwave.

  20. As for the dog, my 80lb golden IS part of my floor cleaning process. I vaccuum up her hair, she takes care of the carrot tops, apple peels, dollops of sour cream, etc. that I manage to drop (cooking with RA is a challenge!). Keeps me from having to mop hourly, too!

I tend to care whether the counters are clean, even if not tidy. (mine aren't tidy for sure!) You kitchen counters and table are obviously cleaned and scrubbed.

Perhaps the snarker could learn to prepare food on counters and eat from a table like the rest of us, rather than using her floor.... OK, I need to pray about being less mean-spirited today!

  21. This person obviously has never actually used a kitchen or had a dog to love. They have perhaps seen a kitchen on TV or at Lowes but never atually used one.

  23. My mother once gave me a popsicle (homemade in tupperware thingies that someone gave her because they were moving!) and before she could do anything I lowered it so "Chippy" the dog could have the first lick and then I took my lick.

I lived. My mother even lived, despite her shock.

A kitchen that looks like it "too clean" probably doesn't get used much. I clean like a fiend, but we are busy and we eat from scratch. It is only spotless when I turn the lights off at night. In the morning the cats and the pup gather there for "goodies" while I drink my coffee. They are quiet and let me sort myself out before my day starts. I'll be sad when their little faces are not there any longer. Soon, my beloved people join me and my real work day starts, which entails making messes in the kitchen.

Patrice, your kitchen says "love" to me.

  24. I guess people just can't grasp the concept of "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." I just went and read the comments and seen the one shown here and another that are just pathetic. While I don't own any dogs I do have indoor cats as well as ferrets and them combined with my hubby and kiddo there is no way the floor ever stays clean. I sweep twice a day and vacuum every day or two and there is always animal fur everywhere, do I end up with some in my food, yep I do once in a while, but it doesn't bother me or anyone in my house. I often have animals in the kitchen while I am cooking/baking and growing up at my parent's house it was the same way. If you live in the country and have livestock and animals its just a part of life. I prefer the type of pictures you post on your blog. It shows real life and a real kitchen of someone who works hard. Keep up the good posts, and if people don't like how your kitchen and house looks, then they shouldn't read the blog.

  35. Consider the 'source' it sounds like someone who lives 'in the city' not to put down city-dwellers. When you actually live in a home vs staying in a house, there's a Huge Difference! I have done construction in past years and I have seen some Beautiful/Showcase kitchens, the thing is they were full of the Latest & Greatest gadgets/appliances. But the families never used their kitchens for their intended purposes 'they ordered take-out & pizza most of the time' or ate their meals out.

How Sad! Our dogs have always been treated as family, 'what's Good Enough for Us, is Good Enough for Them, in all things. I guess that is 'the cost of living ina a bubble'.

GOD Bless You and Your Home!

  36. I am new to your blog, I just found it through Bob's blog Satisfying Retirement. Anyway this is the first post I see and I had to go find your kitchen. Looks fine to me, although I am a bit persnickety about the prints on the blender base it's not really a big deal if the rest of the blender is clean. As for the dog we have a small dog and he gets no where near the food but I find his hair everywhere, as do I find mine everywhere, so what ya gonna do. You live with a dog you live with hair. Wow. I like your butcher block btw, nice and convenient. Can't wait to dig around your blog it looks fun so far.

  38. I have a comment to make and it's this..."MORE PIE FOR LYIDA" and let her lick the pie plate afterwards! I love your blog Patrice and I love you sharing your life, family and experience with all the rest of us and my other comment to the "snarky, obviously obsessed person on cleanliness, you better not live out in the country my dear and plan on having that spotless home and kitchen that you think because you will be sorely disappointed unless you have forty eight hours in your day for that. You'll find you don't have all that extra time, or probably the cleaning person you presently have to make sure all is spotless. I can't imagine having to have everything just so after farming all day, taking care of livestock, children, laundry and cooking and putting food up and cutting firewood for the woodstove and the rest on the list to do. I'd say this person better not even consider doing any homesteading because it probably wouldn't fit into their way of life. Wonder how they would have felt living off the land years ago. Good grief...they had outhouses and other very undesirable things! HA! I sure wouldn't want that person on my team if the SHTF unless they wanted to keep everything spotless for the rest of the whole crew that would be trying to work together to keep food on the table, shelter and protection, etc. But then again, I'm sure it wouldn't work because we'd all have to take our boots off at the door even in an emergency. So, pay no mind to that person behind that CLEAN door! By the way, the pie looks wonderful and very tasty. Wish I could have been there for a piece. Tell Lydia to save me a piece next time and to remember, don't drop any crumbs on that floor because the "clean nazi" is watching! 1. I completely agree. I just about live in my kitchen. We have 5 cats and 5 dogs..and YES we have hair all over...it's a tradeoff for the love and great times we have with our animals. We live on a ranch and sometimes there have been baby calves in the kitchen getting warm. When we're milking, there's always a milk mess going on...straining, washing jars, making butter, cheese, yogurt...and we cook everything from scratch.

Instead of being snarky, maybe the poster needs to get a life and learn how to really live!

  41. I have read your blog for a long time. I had to go back and look for the dirt, also! I cracked up laughing because it looks just like my house. My sister and mom are crazy neat/clean and they have always told me I am a slob. But, like you, I cook from scratch and can quite a bit and we have two hairy dogs. Ironically, I am a dental hygienist and have extremely high standards at work (as I should). They get quite relaxed at home!! Keep up the good work!

  47. Patrice: I think this comment leads to a larger problem. Government, Consumerism and Marketing. We are ruled and regulated to the point we think we will die or become terminally ill if we don't listen to and follow the instructions of the government and manufacturers. We are bombarded on a daily basis how to live our lives and the type of food and products we need so we can be healthy and productive. Do we really need expiration and best by dates on everything? We do really need a product to clean our dishwashers and washing machines? It's a pretty sad state when they put a best by date on each individual roll of lifesavers. Marion

Politically, I am for the most part on different sides than you……but in this situation…..I have to say that I relate to the guy that said dog hair is like a condiment in his home.

I think you do a wonderful job of trying to provide for your family with wonderful tasty meals along with all of your instruction on how to preserve food………and for someone to get their hair up over how you do that is being petty and miserable only to themselves.

For God’s sake man……lighten up and get out of that straight jacket you are in! BJ

But I must say, the after clean-up pictures....I honestly thought 'My, how sparkly clean Patrice's kitchen is. I wish I could get my after clean-up kitchen to look that nice!"

AND, I have three cats (one is long-haired). I have cat hair EVERYWHERE! Regardless of how much I clean.

Not too many bloggers document and photograph daily life the way you do and I for one and grateful for it. Please keep it up and if you ever come to our place for dinner, I'll do my best to get the dog hair out of the food first! And probably fail...

  64. Wow.

I actually laughed at the snarker's comment about how filthy your kitchen and appliances are, because I've seen pictures of your kitchen enough to know how untrue that is!

With all the activities you do in that kitchen, if you did not regularly clean it, it would be unidentifiable as a kitchen. You post kitchen pictures often enough that it is obvious that it never gets to that point.

I love your kitchen. I love your house. I love and find inspiration in all the things you do. I aspire to do even a fraction of it myself.

I agree with everyone else that this person has no life, and doesn't even realize it. The snarker is jealous or angry about something else. Amazing.

We have 3 dogs, one cat and kids and their friends that come and go all day long. Nothing stays clean 24 hours a day in a household that lives to the fullest and prepares for what ever life gives them. Don't let this freak bother you. We your readers love your posts and help and advice. And personally, I think your kitchen looks just fine.

  67. I got a wonderful motto posted on my facebook one time:
"Boring women have spotless homes. And, honey, I come from a long line of FASCINATING women!"

Hygeine is one thing, but our cultural obsession with everything looking sparkly new at all times is part of what is leading us into a pit of debt and uselessness.

The myth of perfect appearances is also one of the tools historically used to rob women of their voices and political power (bound feet? corsets? talking about Hillary's hair or Sarah Palin's looks?)

    Do-ers do. Critics criticize.

I raised my kids with 2 shaggy sheltie dogs underfoot. And my kids are now healthy productive adults... Our dogs slept with us and I am sure ate under the table with us (although I never saw it, but you know kids) and played with us. We really loved our dogs and they were part of the family! Besides with all the work you do it is hard to keep up with the Jones in the way of a spotless house. I figure a spotless house is a not a home it is a museum. Having kids and mess makes a home.

  69. Bet the most cooking that snarker does is in a microwave.

  70. If your sensibilities are offended, keep your freekin nose off the blog! what an a$$clown. Keep up the good work Patrice. Hey snarky, ever wonder who & how your food is prepared? I'd rather eat my own dirt than eat where someone didn't wash their hands after a poop!

  71. Just found your blog....had to laugh a good one. Your snarky commentator would have gone over the edge seeing my latest post...a picture of one of my cats drinking from the kitchen faucet!
I doubt they have many true friends with their nasty personality.

  72. Hello Patrice
I am regularly on your blog and I think that we should not dwell on the comment left by the anonymous person about your article .

Here is a little boy of 3 years could bring freshness to this person if she watched this video.

  73. As a loyal reader I would certainly echo the above sentiments about dog hair/kitchen issues...but Patrice, it doesn't become your dignity to post these snarks on such a regular basis. It almost comes across as a bid for attention...

  74. Ha! Anonymous, why don't you put your real name on your post? Shame on you.

I used to have a 'spotless' kitchen, then we moved to the farm. As hard as we try, there's just way too many things going on at once. My dishes are washed and still shine, but our dogs & cats reside there too. When we had chickens, occasionally one would invite herself in (which we quickly shooed out), we have freshly picked fruit on our counter waiting to be put somewhere ... I could go on and on.

I will never be a kitchen queen again. But we love our farm, our family, our pets and God. He is the one we revere, not our house.

To anonymous, please don't come over. You wouldn't like it.

  75. Likely the individual was just trolling. People like them will be the first to go when the dollar collapses. No real friends, no preparations, and no common sense. Oh well, the gene pool has always needed a cleansing of 'stupid' from the ingredient list anyway. Nature has a lovely way of doing this for us. :)

So, Anonymous snark... snark away. The rest of us will have the last laugh when the power goes out for the last time, and you can pride yourself on how clean and tidy your little kitchen is as your neighbors who haven't had food for ten days break down your door and eat you. ;)

  76. Why not let the world see what we blog authors have to put up with?

I have comments totally enabled on my blogs, but then again, it's a personal choice, and the traffic I get is usually pretty specialized and behaves themselves.

A blog like this one is the perfect target for legions of trolls.

I had similar snarky comments on a few wild food videos I did, because some folks, in ignorance, thought my mixing bowl, plastic cutting board, and colander were 'dirty'. They were not. Dandelions have a white latex sap that dries brown and permanently stains white and clear plastic, and I'd been using them for that purpose for a few years. So there were plenty of 'brownish spots' on those items.
Oh the horror! The *gasp* 'unprofessionalism!' ;)

I ended up putting a disclaimer on my later videos.

If all they got out of my Wild Cookery! videos was that my cutting board and mixing bowl were 'icky' because they were stained with the brown latex from dandelions, then my videos obviously weren't for them. :P

I say let folks read about the ninnies from time to time. If someone doesn't want to read it, they don't have to.
