Hobbity food

Older Daughter was making herself some breakfast the other day -- toast, diced potatoes, and an omelet. She calls such comfort food "Hobbity food."

Suddenly it dawned on me that she was using exclusively homemade or home-grown ingredients, to wit: bread, butter, eggs, garlic, milk, potatoes, cheese, and onions.

To my way of thinking, it was a minor triumph -- to be able to eat well from the results of our own labors.

Hobbity food indeed!

  1. Isn't that satisfying??!! I do love when a meal turns out to be all or almost all homegrown. One of the reasons I enjoy canning!

  4. My long-time dream is to make a reuben sandwich from my backyard. I can handle importing the salt, and perhaps some other spices, but everything else I need to grow and make. So far I can do the sourdough rye, the cheese, the sauerkraut, the dressing... I just haven't tried the pastrami yet. He'll be ready for the butcher in a few months (yes, I'll let the butcher do him in, most likely -- I've already proven to myself I can do that job when necessary, and don't need another proof).

    1. It's a "KitchenPro" by Regal. We bought the bread machine about 17 years ago (I think Older Daughter was about a year old) and I've used it to make thousands of loaves, no exaggeration. I'm certain this particular model is no longer available, but you might just want to hit a thrift store -- I see like-new bread machines available all the time.

    1. Nothing except what's posted in the last blog post. Sounds like some serious harassment.
