Creepy sleeping

Does it seem like more and more people are looking for ways to avoid making any decisions for themselves anymore?

Apparently there's a new mattress cover in development called "Luna" that will turn out the lights for you when you go to sleep, and get coffee ready for you when you wake up.

According to the article: "Luna’s new device fits around the mattress like a cover, and monitors whether those sleeping on it are asleep. When it senses that they are, it can power down lights or change heating settings. And when it detects that they’re waking back up, it can start brewing coffee or turn the lights back on. And while you’re asleep, it will track the room temperature and how much sleep you get, creating the perfect conditions. The bed has 'dual zone temperature,' which means that it can monitor different sides of the bed separately."

What's next? Will it flush the toilet for you when you use the lavatory in the middle of the night?

And that's not all. Apparently it can "accurately tell when demonstrators [in a showroom] pretended to go to sleep and wake up."

And: "Data is stored on the smart mattress cover itself, and then sent to Luna for storage and analysis."

Analysis of WHAT? I'm sorry, but does anyone else find this just plain creepy?

It's beyond my comprehension why anyone -- even technophiles -- would voluntarily participate in this kind of intrusive data collecting.

Sheesh. Give me an old bed any time.

UPDATE: An anonymous poster left this comment, which cracked me up:

"Mom goes to bed early. The lights go out. Dad goes to bed late in the dark. Mom gets up to use the bathroom. The lights go on and the coffee starts brewing. Mom returns to bed and the lights go out. Dad gets up to use the bathroom. The lights go on and the coffee is getting stronger. Dad returns to bed and the lights go out. Dad has been grumbling because Mom woke him up and Mom is upset with Dad for waking her and the coffee is getting stronger all the time. This could be a lot worse if mom and dad are old and get up more than once during the night. I see so many problems with this, it would take for ever to list them."

  1. Creepy is the word, Patrice. But hey, there's plenty of material in this one blog post for an entire Science Fiction series surrounding the ominous, Luna Data Base. Like Invasion of the Body Snatchers only not. :)

  2. No, Patrice, you are NOT the only one that finds it just plain creepy.

I think creepy might be a bit of an understatement.

It's bad enough that they know who I talk to, where I go, and what I buy. I don't care to live in a world where they also know when I'm sleeping, and when I'm only lying in bed.

  3. May I add, that was a pretty badly-written article (the original, not yours).

But check out those links-- I may be cursed with a mattress that relays data on my sleep habits to whoever cares to stick their nose in, but I can look years younger with fuller, thicker eyebrows!!

    *roll*

Oh brave new world with such people in it...

  4. How does Luna help you if the power goes out at night? Collect THAT for storage and analysis. Creepy is right. What happens if you gain a couple of pounds over the holiday season? Is that sent to your healthcare provider and credit card company so they can each cut you off from being a useless eater? The mind boggles. As soon as someone issues me my own futuristic Jet Pack, then I will begin to live like Jane Jetson and family.

  5. That electronic bed has some bugs in it. (Shame on me)

  7. I find this particular application creepy...but....(and hear me out here pls) I think it *could* actually be implemented in such a way to be useful-

for instance, I haven't rested well in several years. Being an engineer, I would love to be able to see when I get my deepest rest, etc and all the data that would come from being monitored at home (unlike a sleep study at a hospital setting) and then use that data to "tweak" my sleeping hours/environment. The difference is- I would want the data self contained (not transmitting back to the manufacturer-only I could access it) and I can turn on my own lights and coffee pot thank you very much!

    1. Sleep Number beds have something like this. I can't remember what it is called but I opted not to get it. Maybe this might help.

  8. I already have an alarm clock in the person of my dog. I am patient so I can wait for my own coffee to brew. I turn off my own lights and flush my own toilets. Anachronistic or what?

  9. Observe where this originated. The UK. It appears the UK is competing with California to be known as the "land of the fruits and the nuts".
The simplest answer (at least until the Fed gov't gets involved) is: Just don't buy it - don't let your wife buy it - If your deranged in laws send it for Christmas, don't allow it in the house. Just because it exists doesn't mean you need it.
    But, Patrice, you knew that.

  10. Why should I have to turn out my own lights and start my own coffee?

I deserve to have the most comfortable sleep climate!

What's that? It's going to cost me how much???

That's not fair. How dare this company design this and get fat and rich?!!

The government should provide these, free of charge, to everyone! No one should be forced to live in a world...

  11. Thinking about it, I guess it could be helpful for people with issues with either going to sleep or waking up. But why would you want to send this information to someone else? If you desire such gadgets, it would be far cheaper to buy a timer for your light switch and/or coffee pot.

Personally, I go to sleep better with a little noise in the background. (Keeps my mind a little occupied so I'm not thinking about what I need to accomplish tomorrow.). I set the 30 minute sleep timer on the TV and I rarely am awake to hear it turn off.

The only benefit I can see for this product would be for home sleep studies for someone with sleep apnea or some other severe sleep issue for which they were seeking professional help.

  12. It would be nice if it could sense when I'm about to have a hot flash and activate a 10 minute cooling cycle on just my side of the bed. I'd pay for that! ;0) LOL

  13. Rethinking this slightly.... I think my chickens would just love it! I would be delighted to put one out there for them if it would seriously bother the nerds. I am wondering what Luna's analysis geeks would make of the girls nighttime antics. You see, they each jump off and on to their roosts as they feel like it at night, and each likes their coffee at different times and at different strengths. Snark!

  14. I vote CREEPY too!! I noticed the new Sleep Number Bed records when you sleep and how etc. Who gets this data? No thank you for sure!! Johnny Carson used to call us in California not just the land of fruit and nuts but fruit nuts and flakes too. I did not live here then but still think it appropriate! No matter where I live I will wake up myself or with an alarm clock and don't want any device recording it for the ages. !! I had never heard of the device you posted about... now I have. Yes, creepy. Sarah

  15. Can you imagine if you're trying to co-sleep a nursing baby with this thing? Wake, sleep, wake, sleep. Or if the crib is across the room: up, down, up down, on, off, on, off.

    What silliness.

But then, they do actually have toilets in Japan that are entirely hands-free/will clean you and are capable of monitoring your blood sugar and other such levels ... so ... there's that next level of intrusiveness.

  16. And, if mom and dad get frisky, do bells and whistles go off at Luna headquarters? Jeff

  17. So, this is a combination electric blanket/teasmade, only 'smarter'?

IF I wanted an audience in the bedroom, I'd like to at least know who they were

Besides, if you want light without stumbling to the light switch, get a clappy lamp, or rig a remote control for the lights. Don't go for the sinister manchester.

  18. Phew! Boy oh boy, do all your sensible readers know what they're talking about! I got many good laughs from their comments! This new mattress cover is creepy, all right. It gives me the heebie-jeebies! There just MIGHT be some folks who can use this thing, but not enough to make it profitable, unless they charge an arm and a leg for it! Thanks, but no, thanks! --Fred in AZ

  19. Yeah its almost as bad as a loan company that puts a GPS in your truck so they can see where you are going in it or whether you are working. I asked if I was going to have a chip in my forehead to see have many times I went to the bathroom or wasted my time sleeping instead of working. Jesus what next?
