Heat wave's a-comin'

I tell ya, this is the weirdest darn June we've seen since moving to Idaho. We're having temperatures not normally seen until August. In fact, as the weather forecast below illustrates, we're experiencing temperatures almost 25F higher than normal.

On Sunday, the projected temperature is supposed to be 99-102F. The historical average is 76F. Oh, have I mentioned before how much I hate heat?

Since there's no shade in the pasture, we'll be moving the beasties back into the woods on Friday. Back and forth, back and forth -- the critters are doubtless wondering what the heck is going on...

There's hardly any grazing left in the woods (no grass is regenerating since we've had no rain) so we'll have to feed. But it's better than letting the poor animals bake in cruel and unrelenting heat.

Yuck.

  1. I do not dispute your points, I'm sure it is accurate for where you are. However I just came back from a trip that took me all over the West and I probably said to my wife 100 times "it sure is green here, I have never seen it so green". And this includes Idaho. We were in constant rain in OK and Texas. A lot of rain in AR, Missouri, Kansas, SD. We got out of the rain in Montana and Idaho but it was obvious it had been raining most of the spring there because the land was green and the grass and crops were high. Interestingly Utah, AZ and NM were green as well. Is there a drought in the West? Yes there was for most of the West but spring rains reversed it except for Southern California. I live in Western Oregon where the drought maps still show moderate drought but we had a lot of spring rain as well and the only drought indication is the lack of snow pack.

This is in some respects an odd weather year but in other respects it is "normal". Normal because every few years we get this kind of El Nino/La Nina conflict and a jet stream that goes deep nto the South and back up out of the Gulf of Mexico. But the frequency is long and as humans we tend to think it isn't normal. But indeed if you look at weather history this is exactly normal.
An aside: I drove through Idaho and through the Big Hole country. Beautiful! I will have to go back to enjoy camping there.

    1. There's still plenty of drought in my part of Utah, spring rains notwithstanding. Lack of snow pack is a far bigger water problem for places around here than somewhat higher than usual spring rains can fix.

  2. I checked my weather yesterday evening and while doing so, the Sunday forecast went from 104 to 108. It's down to 106 now, lol. Six days of 100 or above with Friday 99. We made similar plans for the two horses, savings some grass that is in the treed areas. Since our fencing is not completed, we use 23 panels and make a big pen; we'll be outside in the early morning hours to move them each day, setting out extra water for them and the chickens.
We are going to work split shifts, with a meal and siesta after the morning session, with whatever indoor chores need to be done, then go out and do what we can in the evenings.
I was hoping this wasn't normal for June in Idaho.

  3. I wish we could send you some of the flood waters from here in Texas. It's unreal the amount of rain we've gotten. And our temperatures seem low for the most part--no days over 100ยบ yet.

  4. Yeah, it's supposed to be a scorcher here this week, so our 30-year-old air-conditioner died today (unrepairable at a reasonable cost).

  5. We here in Southern Idaho are bracing for the same thing, I had to laugh when you wrote you 'hate heat'! I start complaining about the heat when it gets to about 75! Good thing my hubby is long suffering! We will water the garden every day instead of every other, and do our work in the shifts as well. We don't have air conditioning so we will spend the hottest hours doing 'sedentary' activities in front of the fan and then go back outside later - oh and NO oven activities - I scrounge for no-bake recipes in the summer. Smile, it could be worse, we could live in California and be unable to water the garden - or in Missouri and it's too wet to plant in some areas. Guess we'll just have to stay here in Idaho! ;)

  6. Summer is coming to south central Washington state also. The weather man says from Friday thru at least July 6th, we will have temperatures from 101 to 110. Outside work is going to start at day break and hope to be done by noon, maybe try some evening work, if it cools any. Will be ready to start grain harvest when this is over. Keeping the garden soaked. Everyone take care.

  7. Heat. YECH! I hate it, too. I hate it so much, I spend valuable dollars every summer to service the air conditioning in my vehicle...dollars I could be using to save up for a wood stove for winter warmth.

Instead, I choose to make myself comfortable against the summer heat.

I figure I can always put more clothes on in the winter, but there's only so many I can take off in the summer. LOL.

Keep those animals comfortable. The heat can't last forever.

And remember one of my favorite old "M*A*S*H" programs. In this episode, the M*A*S*H camp had the opportunity to procure a folding canvas bathtub in the middle of a hot summer. Everyone pooh-poohed it saying, "Who wants a hot bath in the middle of a hot summer?"

Then Hawkeye reminded everyone that a bathtub can be filled also with COOL water....

  8. Even here in Florida, where we're known for hot summers, the heat has been about 10 degrees warmer than usual with a heat index in the 100's. Yes, we have AC but keep it at 80 and use ceiling and 'personal' fans to keep cool. Don't have animals but do garden in containers and use rain water. Haven't had much of that prior to yesterday where we got 2". Thankfully we now have 5 rain barrels full. It's going to be a long hot summer.

  9. Hot temps here in Northern CA. No A/C unit went out two weeks ago, still waiting on parts. House temp reaches 91/92 during day then cools to a lovely 84 in the morning. Ugh. I die when temps are nearing 78. This has been murder for me. We haven't had much rain this year, so I'm watering fruit trees at night when it's cooler.

  10. We have had a great deal of rain in the Appalachians this year. Our creek has flooded multiple times and we can't mow or weed because by the time things get close to drying out - well - it rains again. Makes it a bit humid and "thick" as the hubs puts it.

  11. I don't mind the heat. Don't have an air conditioner. Don't want an air conditioner. I bought a new car some years back and requested no air conditioner. It came with one but they choose to give it to me for free. I never use it I prefer to open a window. I have lived in the desert in 116 degree summers and didn't mind it. I have lived in the deep South with months of 100 degree plus temps and 100% humidity. I didn't like that but it was bearable. I love the summer. My wife and I are discussing a trip to Hawaii and I keep telling her I don't want to go now I want to wait until December. Why leave Oregon in the beautiful summer when you could vacation in Hawaii in the wet cold winter. Having said that I don't mind the cold either. I love the snow

  12. Silly question... where did you get that forecast? It seems much more comprehensive than the ones I find. I also like the lay out. Try to stay cool!

    1. Your right anonymous. It's called weather manipulation! My guess is "they" plan to burn the west this summer?

  14. You must have the weather we should be having. Because here in P.A. it has been miserable, wet and pretty cool. This weekend more rain coming and High of 63. So much for globull warming. When the left says we are gonna burn, I cut more firewood ; )
