Please stand by....

The girls and I came down with a bad cold/fever over the weekend and I feel like ca-ca. Older and Younger Daughters are pretty much recovered, but I'm in the worst of it right now.

I had a lousy night's sleep (shivers, fever dreams, etc.) and spent much of the day in and out of bed, taking ibuprofen and eating scads of oranges

Please stand by until I've got some brainpower back!

  3. Try taking Elderberry extract liquid or freeze dried Elderberry juice capsules. It will run your immune system thru the roof, 10x more effective than Vitamin C!

  4. Take care of yourself first. We'll wait...

  5. Sorry to read about you and your children feeling under the weather. Hope you all recover quickly.

Not big on buying new and improved cures at the store. Sort of the old fashioned about what type of otc products I take or give my family. I will pass along the name of product our pediatrician suggested (he has the same view as me, less meds are better). The product is called Emergen-C. Each packet when mixed with water give you 1000mg of Vitamin C. Each Sept when our youngest starts school (wish God gave me the gift to teach as you) I start drinking it twice a day. If I feel that little tickle at the back of my throat or he appears to be 'coming down' with something I up it to 3 times a day. It may well be psychosomatic but I haven't had a cold/flu in the past 4 years. While my husband who refused to use it for the first 2 years, and suffered with days of cold symptoms, now hasn't had one in the past 2 years. Will also add, I am a bit of a fanatic with washing hands and cleaning surfaces especially the months of Sep-Oct.

Never use antibacterial soaps or wipes. Just plain hot soapy water and variations of vinegar and, bleach. Worry about the bacteria mutating using the antibacterial stuff.

Enough of all of that, again, sending my best wishes to you and yours and thank you for such a wonderful site.

    A fan,
    Barbara

    1. EmergenC has Aspartic Acid in it which is a form of Aspartame/fake sugar. I'd stay far away from it, if I were you.

    2. That product is also packed with sugar with lowers your immune response.

  6. The good news is, nobody's going to die because you took your sweet time getting back to a blog.

Take all the time you need, ma'am. Hope you feel better soon. A bad cold is the pits.

  7. I used elderberry, ACV and honey elixer to get over the flu/cold I had a couple of weeks ago. It worked great.

  8. OTC "medicines" generally make you feelbetter but don't cure anything and don't make the illness shorter. You may indeed feel better after taking an antihistamine but the illness is in exactly the same place all you have done is alleviate some of the symptoms. But that's good! Just don't try to claim it is a cure or it prevents colds/flu/etc. 1000mgs of vitamin C will make you think you are doing something useful and if that makes you feel better then do it. But much like voodoo and other superstitions it doesn't actually do anything useful.
Here is what will help: Bedrest, drink lots of fluids, aspirin or tylenol for pain and fever, eat a little even if your not feeling hungry and if it gets worse or temp goes too high see a doctor.

  10. Humor is always good medicine when feeling under the weather..

I'll have you recall my post about my young bride to be and our 1st Thanksgiving turkey and the explanation of what each part is that came inside the turkey from the store...

Also the Christmas Tree that dad cut up in the dining room cause mom thought it too big, only for mom to pick out a bigger one later...

    How about baby names?
In 1999 my wonderful wife was fast approaching the due date of our first. We knew she was with daughter. My wife being the devout Christian that she is, brought home a book on Biblical names and asked that I would take time to pick several names and we would compare. Well a week went by and she needed to return the book. My wife asked if I had picked out any names? To which I replied, "sure did, two of them, we know you are with daughter, Right?" "I choose Noah Peter".. The look I got.. The day finally came as a proud daddy holding my baby girl swaddled in my arms, I looked up from the chair I'm sitting in to see the name tag on the hospital bassinet "NOAH PETER --------"... No she didn't? My wife can play too. A year and a half later, same hospital, same delivery crew, The lead nurse recalling the fun we had with the name of our first, asked about it as I was swaddling our son, then she turned to me with the bassinet name card in hand and said " He's GOTTA PETER ------".

Humor is good, Hope you all a speedy recovery...

  13. So sorry that you are sick. I hope that you are feeling better soon. I am just home in Nome from Anchorage and saw your Post from Sunday. Things in Nome will definitely give you sticker shock. Our gas is $5.97 per gallon. Soda is $12.98 per 12 pack. A bag of chips $7.99 and up. Thank goodness for that I won't be eating junk food. Water is $24.99 per case-the same as you get in Walmart for $4.99. It's eye opening. The wages aren't as inflated as one might think. While I make about $20 per hour, most people here make about $13. Other than that it is a great place!

    1. Aye Patt, I often wonder just how you bush people manage. But like you say, most items are "junk" and not worth it anyway. (Does Nome qualify as "out in the Bush"?)

    2. I had to chuckle, not at your illness, but like you, I have found I have turned a corner where I cannot shrug off a cold as easily as I once could.

      Ahhhh, the vitality of youth.

  16. super tonic and fire cider. It has kept my family and others that I teach out of the doctors office and away from flu shots. I am a herbalist and those two are the best!!!!

  18. Hope you feel better soon. My family had the same thing. Baby ran a temperature of almost 105 degrees. Pretty scary!! I have it now, I haven't been able to find anything to help either. Not easy milking on mornings like this. My cow won't let my husband milk her either. So its me, her and my throbbing head. Get well soon. I know you have to much to do to be sick. We will pray for you. God Bless you and your family.
