No white Christmas

A few days ago we had a pretty snowfall.

I'm not sure the animals agreed, but after all it's their choice not to tuck themselves under the shelter of the barn awning.

Nonetheless it was a very pretty snowfall.

Even grungy old tractor tires -- awaiting their chance to be put in the garden next spring -- are transformed by snow.

However a necessary hose, accidentally left undrained, caused problems. We hauled it inside to defrost.

The view across the fields was vast. It was snowing so hard that it was difficult to avoid getting snowflakes on the camera lens.

A solitary hen braves the white stuff.

After slipping and falling several times on a sheet of ice inconveniently disguised underneath the snow, I parked this cart on top so we would avoid the bad spot.

Major is easy to distinguish in this weather -- especially when he wears snow on his back.

I went for a walk to admire the views.

Turkeys.

And then yesterday the temperature rose and it rained and rained and rained. The snow first turned into sloppy slush, then disappeared altogether. This morning the pasture looked like this:

Ah well. As pretty as a white Christmas is, a brown Christmas certainly simplifies travel plans for those visiting others.

  3. I don't know which I like more --- the wide-eyed exuberance of a 4-month old kitten catching her first mouse, or the grey muzzle of a faithful old dog. Both make me happy. Glad I don't have to choose.

  4. It's just past ten on Christmas Eve and I'm about to turn in. We'll be up well before dawn to catch an early boat to get over and spend the day with the folks.

I'm grateful for the clear, calm weather.

Wishing all of you a very blessed and Merry Christmas.

  5. And a very Merry Christmas to all of you from NorCal.

Enjoyed the photo of the turkeys. I have family visiting from the Philippines and this season they got a great introduction to snow...before Christmas in one of our rare snow events and then going to town we nearly literally ran over a big flock of turks. Now they will have photos and lots to tell when they go home.

I hope the new year brings us better than we deserve.

  10. Love the pictures. I built a lean-to for my horses and what do they do? They stand outside in the wind and cold! My dog even will sleep in the open with snow all over his back rather than go into the hay shed. Best wishes during this Christmas season. Greg from Kansas
