A senior moment

Don went into Coeur d'Alene today to do some errands, including a stop at the excellent St. Vincent de Paul thrift store where he purchased a pair of pants and a warm winter shirt. Total due: $9.00.

While ringing up his purchase, the nice gentleman cashier asked Don if he wanted the senior discount.

Of course Don said NO. I mean, really. Don, a senior? Bah.

But just out of curiosity, Don asked how old he would have to be to get the discount.

He ended up saving $2.00.

  1. A few years ago, I stopped for lunch and didn't notice until after I'd eaten my lunch and looked at the receipt that the cashier had given me the senior discount. I couldn't decide if I should be thankful or insulted LOL (btw, I just turned 60)

  3. Way to go Don. I turned 55 last July and have started to take advantage of senior discounts.

  4. I never could decide which is worse....asking someone if they want the senior discount, or just giving it to them.

Laughing here after a tough day. Thanks for the giggle.

  5. Have to LOL, because DH is salt and pepper, but neither of us 50 yet (coming soon). New girl at local thrift store asked us about sr discount, and we both laughed! I will when I get there, for sure, but I'm not going to take advantage of it before I'm due!

  7. I was so happy to finally be able to get some senior discounts! When frugality is the name of the game, every little bit helps.

  8. I'm at that awkward age (50) where I might look old enough for the discount on a bad day, but really don't qualify, the continual AARP membership pleas notwithstanding.

  9. Hubby often goes into store on Thursdays to get the groceries because that's our senior day. Last week he fussed about how busy the store is on Thursdays and I laughed and reminded him that it is the savvy old people day for other's also.
We were shocked to find out that "senior discount" is for those 55 and older, not thinking or feeling old. That was several years ago, LOL.

  10. I have a cousin who looks older than she is (toothless, trifocals-just kinda raggedy looking), and was asked by a clerk if she wanted the senior discount-she was 47 at the time. She threw a hissi, but,the way I look at it, if ya gotta look all old, why not take advantage of it?

Ha ha. I qualified for my senior discount years ago!

  12. Senior Discounts? I always wish the age of senior discounts would be posted somewhere so you don't have to ask or be asked. When we moved to FL we found some stores started the discounts at 50, a few more at 55, even more at 62 and almost everywhere at 65.

We stopped at a McD's on a trip one day, needed coffee to drive that last hour and a half, and were asked if we wanted the Senior Cup - Senior Cup? It wasn't on the menu, you had to be asked or know to ask for it, it's a small cup of coffee just the right size for us. I think you had to be 62 but it was a few years ago and since we now are over 65 details sometimes get forgotten.

  13. When I was "younger" it seems to me the senior discount was only available once you reached 65. Somehow 55 still seems to young to be a senior....doesn't it? :)

    1. Yes, Fiona, 55 IS too young to be a senior! I'm 68 and I still don't feel comfortable asking for the senior discount. --Fred in AZ

  14. I remember when I started getting the AARP flyers shortly before my 50th, I was thinking "but I'm only 17 on the inside !".
My wife corrected me by saying that she figured I was only about 11 on the inside.

  16. On the plus side Don can now yell "GET OFF MY LAWN" with impunity.

  17. you mean 55 is the age? Really? I guess I'd better get that hat that says "don't forget my senior citizen discount", then, so I can take advantage!

  18. LOL! Funny how it creeps up on you. When somebody says something about age, I have to stop and think a minute, and it still surprises me when I realize I'm 52! How did that happen?

  19. Every little bit does help. These people who get offended are silly. Take your discount. Nobody else really cares how old you look. I'm 69 years old but don't look a day over 68. If the discount is available I take it. We've earned it.

    Huggs..

  20. I started turning gray around 30 and was completely gray by 45. I didn't ask for senior discounts until I actually qualified, but they showed up on my tickets by 45. My husband also grayed early; so we appeared senior early. Strange thing is that now when I'm past 70 people seem surprised when I tell them my actual age. My new doctor didn't notice my age on my paperwork and asked it I was old enough for Medicare. I love him!

  21. Would you believe, I got asked for my ID when buying wine at Costco the other day! I told the young man thank you but in a few weeks I am going to be 30 years past that "magic" age! I certainly do not look anywhere near 21 either, but it was funny. Have a blessed Thanksgiving.

  22. Yeah, Don, I got it offered to me probably 10 years ago and I just turned 60... I don't often ask for it though as I probably should. I may just change my mind, but still may wait until I get to 65 and then be a "grumpy old codger" if I don't get it.... Heh, Heh! Every little $ helps in the economy of our household budget though, as I am sure you know as well!
