Mary Mary quite contrary....

Reader Keith left a comment on my Moving Manure post that absolutely cracked me up. I just had to re-post so everyone would see it.

Mary, Mary, quite contrary
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells
And steel belted radials all in a row.

  1. That really is an impressive looking layout. Now if I could only convince the wife that's the way to go... (sigh!)

  2. Your poem is very similar to mine when I planted our garden in tires a few years ago:
    Mary, Mary quite contrary
    How does your garden grow?
    With Firestone and Michelin...
Ugly tires all in a row!

It was a good year. But last year it was so unbearably and unusually hot that my garden suffered. this season we are on 4 hour a week water restrictions so my garden isn't going to be very big. We will be using our gray water.

  3. Props! :) Thanks Pat!!!

I had some potatoes that sprouted on me, so I took an old gray storage bin punched some holes in it and layered some rock in the bottom for drainage. Put some top soil in and then planted several potato quarters and covered em up. I'll let you know how they turn out. I'd love to do the tire garden, but I'm afraid our county inspector would have a conniption...

  4. I was wondering if you could fill in the spaces where four tires come together with compost and plant something there or if that might not work for some reason.

    1. Oh yes, that would work very well. I have a friend who does that. I haven't done it myself simply because at this point I don't need to (space isn't an issue for us, in case you haven't noticed); but that option is perfectly viable for the future and would be very easy to do.
