The private life of pheasants

One of the fun little things I like to do is sneak up to the gate in the barn and peek into the corral to see what kind of wildlife I can surprise. I've glimpsed all kinds of critters – deer, quail, pheasants, even an elk (outside the fence, not inside).

Yesterday I snuck up, peeked through the gate, and caught a handsome male pheasant engaged in a private moment preening his feathers.

What a handsome boy.

Just one of those little pleasures of country life.

  1. I was born and raised country, but live suburban (happy wife, happy life, ya know). Your snippets like this are a comfort to me. Thank you.

  2. We have a lot of quail around here, my husband likes to toss out some bird seed for them. At first it was around 8-10, now it must be around 40-50. Their social media is quite active. Fun to watch from the windows.

  3. I thought that quails were rather drab with browns and grays, not so colorful. It is beautiful.

    1. Ah, but keep in mind this is a ring-necked pheasant, not a quail. Our quail are as you describe -- handsome, but rather drab in browns and grays.

  4. Fun fact: only birds know how to close the 'zipper' in their feathers. They preen them to close them. Science hasn't even figured it out. Jesus told the birds "shhhh, it will be our little secret"❤️
