Blueberries in the fall

Blueberries are amazing plants. Not only do they produce an abundant harvest...

...but they put on a show as well. The leaves turn brilliant scarlet.

It's like their last hurrah before they drop all their foliage and prepare for the next year.

It's a win-win no matter what season.

  1. I have a few burning bushes that are on they way out. I think I will replace them with a blueberry bush or two. Food and color!

  2. Now, I need to go buy blueberries to eat. Maybe I should grow some, too. I love blueberries.

  3. Do you trim your blueberries? I've read a few articles about tipping the branches to increase production, but it's a fall activity.

    1. I've never trimmed our blueberries, but I probably should. For the varieties I have (Chandlers, Toros, Patriots, Spartans), they should be trimmed in late winter/early spring during dormancy. Mostly it's a matter of removing older canes, or anything that's weak. I have one branch on one bush I am absolutely going to cut back (even though it's productive), because it snagged me every single time I got near it, LOL. However the varieties I have are not highbush or rabbiteye (both of which grow very tall), so pruning isn't necessary to control the height. Instead pruning is done to to encourage new growth, since more fruit grows on younger canes.
