What on earth is in my shoe?

I think it's something of a primal fear: inserting one's foot into the dark depths of a shoe, only to feel something that shouldn't be there.

The other morning I came downstairs, yawning, and sat down to put on my shoes and socks.

But when I inserted a foot into one of my battered sneakers, I felt something wet and lumpy and definitely foreign. I yanked out my foot instantly.

Fetching a flashlight, I peered into the shoe and saw:

Okay, 'tis the season to get little frogs in the house. I guess this guy thought he had a nice cozy cave and didn't appreciate a gigantic invader trying to squash him. I put the visitor outside.

I also put on my sandals for the time being. My sneaker had to dry.

What's the weirdest thing you've found in a shoe?

  1. That may be a frog, but it's obviously been toed!

Here at Rancho Whybother, it's the bluebelly lizards that find the shoes adequate sanctuary. If not lizards, it's black widows... or palmetto bugs... or field mice...

Here at Rancho Whybother, we tap out our shoes before putting them on...

  2. Here in Central Texas we bang the boot heel on the floor and pour out any denizens before inserting foot. Nothing like a scorpion on your sock to start your day.

  3. That's a really nice bug eater you found. I found a freshly yacked hairball in a shoe one morning. Red

  4. I bet that elicited a yelp or an expletive or two... I use to camp on the far side of Alvord desert on the east side of Steens Mountain down in South Eastern Oregon near to the Idaho border and went to put my boots on in the morn and as I started to slip them on heard a slight hiss sound come out of the boot, well, I looked in and saw two small baby rattlesnakes curled up in the bottom... I yelped believe me. Taught me a lesson I knew, pick up and shake your shoes out before putting them on.

    1. ...Can you be more specific about where you camped? Probably not! :)

  5. My daughter squished a gecko in her muck boot and another daughter's toe met a giant cockroach. Always shake out your footwear before putting on! :D

  7. Anything surviving the aroma of my shoe is tough enough to claim it as their own. :)

  8. I have never found anything in my boots/shoes, but - having read every western novel Louis L'Amour ever wrote - I bang 'em and shake 'em before putting 'em on, anyhow. (You can learn a lot from reading books, ya know.)

  9. Is that frog pee? I had on sandals and was in the yard. I thought I had scooped up a stick and kept walking until I could grab the porch railing and kick off the shoe. That stick hurt really bad. Finally, I could kick off my shoe and had scooped up a bumble bee and it stung me.

  12. I once found a fistful of corn kernels and crumbs in a boot I hadn't worn in a while. I think a mouse was storing it's stash in there!
