Losing a friend

We got a call from a neighbor this morning with the sad news that our friend Mike had passed away.

Don and I went over to assist with the details: coordinating with the sheriff and coroner to take him away, helping arrange for cremation and a memorial, and of course comforting the widow, Judy. Other neighbors also helped, along with Mike and Judy's children.

Mike's passing wasn't unexpected. He'd been ill for some time, and it was hard to watch this jovial Marine suffer. At least his passing was peaceful -- literally in his sleep.

It's hard to believe I'll never answer the phone to hear his hearty and cheerful voice saying, "How'ya doing, young lady?"

Mike and Judy were literally born on the same day, and literally born in adjacent hospital rooms. They'd been married well over 50 years and were utterly devoted to each other.

A prayer for Judy's comfort would be appreciated.

Rest in peace, Mike.

  6. Praying for Judy and her family. I lost a friend and second father on Friday. My comfort is knowing that my Dad and the rest of the ‘guys’ were waiting to greet him and they probably haven’t stopped talking yet. I hope that your memories comfort you, too.

  9. Sorry for your loss, and for Judy’s. We’re getting to that time in life I suppose. Can happen any time, but. Sigh. Just almost finished saying goodbye to the people who raised me (one aunt, MIL, and a couple family friends left). Not ready to start saying goodbye to friends.
