I've been a fan of Tattler lids for many years. In my opinion, they are an excellent investment for any dedicated canner.

UPDATE: Loren Stieg, president of Tattler, left the following comment which I wanted to bring to everyone's attention:

Tattler users: Occasionally we have a question from a user with this issue. We usually encourage someone who has this experience to contact me personally and we can get to the cause. We do however have extensive videos and instructional material on our website, www.reusablecanninglids.com for your assistance also. We are more than happy to assist our customers in any way to make your experience using Tattler lids a positive experience. ONE OTHER VERY IMPORTANT POINT!!. The phone number showing on the Tattler box on the side bar is no longer the number to the original Tattler manufacturing headquarters. The new customer service number is 231-349-2325 or for Tech. support, company President personally, Loren Stieg is 231-832-4401.

  1. I got more than my share in a 50% off sale at Christmas time a few years ago. Love them. But I still buy some disposables since I always end up giving some of my jams and fruits to friends and neighbors. The possibility of not getting jar back is one thing. Not getting back a Tattler lid would be terrible.

  2. I have been using the Tattler lids for about 7 years now. I'm an experienced canner (25+ years) and I can just about everything you can imagine. I've worked with the folks at Tattler and tried finger-tight, pulling back the 1/4 inch, less full jars, etc. I tighten them when they come out as per the instructions. But I very often end up with jars that are sealed initially. As in I can pick the jar up by the lid without holding the glass - when I am cleaning the jars before putting them on the shelf. And then months later they mysteriously become unsealed while on the shelf. I've become unwilling to use them on food that is expensive or seriousy labor intensive because I can't stand the loss. Has anyone else out there had this experience? I'm a long-time reader of this blog and I haven't seen this issue come up from other readers. Are you out there? Is this happening to anyone else?

    1. I have had the same problem, which is why I have not purchased very many of them.

    2. We also have this problem so we have stopped using Tattler Kids even though we purchased over 100 of them. If anyone ever figured this issue out, I would be interested in hearing about it.

    3. I was considering buying some, but now I'm not so sure. I'm curious to hear what you find out.

  3. Here are the instructions to follow in order to obtain 100% success: Head Space:
A VERY GOOD TIP FROM A LOYAL TATTLER CUSTOMER (WE CONCUR):
I've found the extra headspace has changed my world since last October. For instance, I just last night canned 36 pint jars of chili with Tattler lids (the USDA recipe); the beef I bought was labelled "extra lean" but you wouldn't guess it, seemed to be a lot of grease that came off it. But anyway, I just now took the canning rings off the jars and washed them all down (from the grease that vented out of a couple of them), but I reckon maybe because I gave those pints 1 1/2 inches headspace every last one of those Tattler lids has sealed up tighter than a drum skin. I have been doing like this since last fall: if 1/4 inch is called for, I have been doing 1/2 inch. If 1/2 inch is called for, I do 3/4 inch. If 1 inch is called for, I do 1 1/2 inches. So far so good since last fall. A seal rate now as reliable as the old-style metal lids. Which means you get the occasional phase of the moon seal that just doesn't set for no particular reason, but quite rare.
We understand how frustrating it is to find an unsealed jar & we are always ready to troubleshoot. We will give you a couple tips & also a refresher course that should help you have 100% success.

    Reusing Rubber Rings:
When reusing your rubber ring the next canning session, look to see if there are sealing grooves indented into the ring from the last time you canned. Place the side with the sealing grooves next to the rim of the jar and the smooth side next to the plastic lid. This will help prevent 'crossthreading' and ensure a good seal.

    Refresher:
Tattler Lids do require a bit of variation from conventional metal lids. Being a two piece combination with a rubber gasket ring Tattler lids must remain a bit loose during processing in order for the vessel to vent pressure building during processing. An online customer gave us a tip that is as good, or better, than anything we offered. To get a “feel” for the correct tightness prior to processing, place the jar on a counter top, or other smooth surface, place your index finger on the lid, not too much pressure, while tightening the metal band. Screw the metal band on until the jar begins to spin on the counter top. This is perfect for processing. Once the process is completed and the jars are removed from the pressure cooker etc., place a towel over the still hot jar, for safety, and finish tightening the metal band. Now just let the jar cool naturally, when cool remove the metal band and lift the jar slightly by the lid. It should be well sealed.

When your pressure drops to zero & when it is safe to open your canner carefully remove your jars. Be sure to place them on a towel. As soon as the bubbles start to die down, cover your jars with a towel & tighten. If any of the lids are domed up do not tighten them, simply leave them to cool to room temperature. A domed lid indicates that the lid was initially too tight going into the canner & pressure was not able to release from the jar. When all jars are cool to room temperature remove metal bands & lift slightly from your counter (this is how you check the seal). Store without metal bands.

  5. Patrice, Thank you very much for including our posts on your blog, I am honored. It feels really good to be 'back in the saddle again' so to speak and be part of your information stream to your followers. Some major events have occurred with Tattler since our last contact. First off Tattler has been moved back to Michigan from Colorado and is again in complete control of the original owner and developer, myself. Secondly for many years a challenge has haunted me to make the Tattler lids more user friendly. Well about two years the light bulb came on and with a slight modification, the 'E-Z SEAL' Tattler was born. The E-Z Seal feature allows the lid to vent without having to be so overly concerned about the per-tightening procedure. A side benefit that came along unexpectedly, was much less liquid loss. Using the E-Z Seal lids in the first testing I canned 18 pints of green beans and 18 pints of beets and didn't lose enough beet juice to discolor the liquid in the pressure caner. As with any product we occasionally have a customer experiencing a difficulty and we welcome that call where you will get an English speaking person to assist you, whether ordering, solving a problem or whatever the concern is. Thanks again.

  6. Hi - Thank you to the Rural Revolution Readers and Loren Steig. I am so happy to know I am not the only person that had jars come unsealed. I was tighening the jars the moment they came out of the canner; so I will try waiting a bit in the future. Very happy because I have hundreds of these lids and I have just reached the point of having them pay for themselves. Let's all can because we CAN!
