Super Bowl? Yawn

Actual conversation as it just happened:

Me: "Oh, is it Super Bowl Sunday tomorrow?"

Older Daughter: "Yes. The only reason I know is because there's a show I like watching on Sunday, and they moved it to Friday for this week only."

Don: "Who's playing?"

Older Daughter: "No idea."

Me: "Don't know, don't care."

Don: "It will be interesting to see how many people are in church tomorrow."

Older Daughter: "Or how rapidly the church service progresses."

Don, looking up who's playing on the computer: "Oh, it's the Chiefs vs. the Eagles. Whoever they are. All I can think of is 1970s rock bands."

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how we celebrate Super Bowl Sunday.

True story: Back in 1989 when Don and I were dating, he lived around the corner from me in a college town where bicycles were more common than cars. One day I hopped on my bike and rode around the corner to see him. I found him on his front lawn, his bicycle upended in front of him, doing some repairs on it.

"Why aren't you in watching the game?" I asked. "Today is Super Bowl Sunday."

"Well..." He looked up from his bike. "I'm not really that into football."

"Hmmmmm," I distinctly remember thinking. "This is someone I could get serious about."

The rest is history.

  1. Thanks for the reminder about the super bowl, we turned off the television about 10 years ago.

  3. I wish I could ignore the Superbowl, but unfortunately I live in Glendale, AZ where it is taking place this year. I can't wait until it is all over and everyone leaves. I hope this year is different but the city has lost money on previous Superbowls. It has been a no win situation.

  4. I wouldn't have known who was playing, and after reading, have already forgotten.

  6. I know nothing about the super bowl. In 1966 during the world cup final hubby and I went shopping. The shops were empty. It was great

  7. For me a super bowl is a taco salad.

  8. When I was just started dating my wife, she asked what team would be in the Super Bowl that year. I told her I had no idea and didn't care, I told her I was going to organize and clean my large roll around tool box that day. She asked me to send a picture of my tool box as at that time we lived about 10 hours away from each other. I did just that and when I went to visit her about two weeks later at her work, she had that pictured framed and sitting on her desk and said the other women found that adorable and swooned I was a handyman fix it guy as well as "cute", what ever that meant...

    1. A handyman fix it guy, as well as cute, means all your bases are quite possibly covered with her. Other plusses could be a great sense of humor, good with kids, good provider, isn't addicted to armchair sports, loves the Lord, and is interested in her. Clearly though, by framing that picture she felt you possibly qualified for a future together.

  9. Loathe sportsball and - at least when the 'local' team isn't playing - my husband no longer watches. Unfortunately he's been a fan of one team since childhood.

The reason for this year's particular hullaballoo is that both quarterbacks are non-White. That is a reason for celebration in AINO (America In Name Only).

  11. We never mentioned it or looked to see when it was on. I did say I wondered if the crowd buying food for the Superbowl would be out of the stores. Tommy knew it had started. And, he never even looked to see the score during commercials. He will watch the IronBowl because we live in Alabama and he graduated from Auburn University with Engineering degree. I like shopping during the Iron Bowl because the streets and stores are mostly empty. I am happy when Auburn wins but never watch any football.

    1. Shopping T-town on Iron Bowl day was very frustrating the one time I did it years ago. The stores may have been empty at the mall, but the parking lot was jam packed with vehicles because of shuttles taking people to the game! The mall probably made that deal knowing it would be a slow day for business. Now I stay away from that mall unless going to a specific store with its own outside entrance. It's had some problems. Plus, Sears closed. So sad. I loved being able to leave my vehicle there for servicing and shop and or eat in the mall until it was done.

  12. LOL! I actually predicted which teams would play and which would win. If I were a betting man I could've won some serious money. I was one of those young men who didn't really get into any sport, but as I've gotten older I've found that I love watching football. I'm a big New England Patriots fan.

  14. Sorry y’all missed it Chris Stapleton had fans, players and coaches in tears as he sang our National Anthem. (Not to mention more than a few of us “retired “ athletes)
