Egos on parade

I looked out our kitchen window this foggy morning and saw ... egos on parade.

What cracks me up about gobblers puffing themselves up like Spanish grandees is how monumentally indifferent the females act in the face of such blatant machismo.

While the males strut their stuff, can't you just hear the hens saying something like, "Where did you get your hair done, Mabel? I just love your new style!"

Yet I guess the macho display works. Every year there are lots of baby turkeys running around.

To each their own.

  1. Aren't you glad Don doesn't puff up and strut?

  3. One morning I had 4 toms try to interest one hen in my front yard. Maybe 20' from the house. Yes, I laughed. They were so serious and the hen was not showing any interest at all in them.

  4. You're killin me with all these food pictures LOLLOL. You must not have a bunch of predators in your neck of those woods. Yotes and feral cats have wrecked our turkey population.

  6. Patrice, they were doing the same at my parents' place this weekend. So glorious. We watched a couple have a puffed out chest stand off, until one collapsed in defeat.

  7. Yesterday a turkey hen strolled across our backyard in suburban Detroit very calmly as though she had some destination in mind.

  8. They are all over the place here... right up until opening day of spring turkey season, and then every last one will disappear for a month, not to be seen again until May, when they will all suddenly reappear, to mock me.

  10. we had a Tom waltz by with a flock of 20 hens a few days ago ......But I thought his display was to ward off any attacks and show off his superior size to other Toms...no hens ever pay attention in the wild or in the chicken yard either .
