For the last few days, we're been hearing dire weather reports about the massive storm and bitter cold bearing down on two-thirds of the U.S.
Apparently this is the worst storm system in something like 40 years and is NOT something to ignore or take lightly. Officials have been urging people to batten down the hatches and prepare accordingly.
Needless to say, lots of store shelves are being stripped bare.
Meanwhile, the western U.S. is under a high-pressure system that is preventing any moisture from hitting the ground. We've been cloudy, below freezing, and bone-dry for weeks. There isn't a drop of rain or snow anywhere in the forecast, and the locals are getting worried about a severe fire season this summer.
I guess it's a weird winter for everyone.
Stay safe and warm, dear readers, and if you're in the path of this storm, report in as you can how you're faring.

Prayer for you all! We could use some rain in Northern CA to wash the Alder tree pollens down. Please stay safe everyone!
ReplyDeleteReports have it that the northern Arkansas Walmart near us is completely out of hot chocolate mix. More concerning was the gas station chain store out of fuel. We've spent the day enlarging the wood pile and filling water jugs, with an eye to going nowhere for a couple of days.
ReplyDeleteIn SW Idaho it's been non-stop inversion layer but the sun did peak out today. Looking at my flower beds I'm wondering if I should hook up a hose and water them. No moisture in the next 10 days. Hoping for something so we get our full allotment of irrigation water this spring.
ReplyDeleteSouth-central PA. Four fun-lovin' degrees first thing this morning- windy, too. Cars amd old people make weird noises in these conditions. Hope everybody stays safe and warm. AMF! (Adios, My Friends!)
ReplyDeleteBattening down the hatches here on Long Island. I remember the blizzard of 1978 well. I turned a giant pile of snow into my own igloo. I was so proud of it.
ReplyDeleteSE New Mexico. 21 degrees. Snowing. We aren’t used to this stuff. And we’re supposed to have two days where the temperature won’t be above freezing!
ReplyDeleteUnusual. But we are staying in and warm.
I was in high school when the Blizzard of '78 hit. The big thing w/ that storm was they didn't expect it to be that big.
ReplyDeletePeople were stuck on the high way heading home. We had not power for days (which stinks when you have a well).
Other than the shoveling I am looking forward to a snow day on Monday!

It's bitterly cold here in the 'Sip. I did my shopping days before this ice storm hit us, it pays to be stocked up before the store shelves go bare from last minute preppers.
ReplyDeleteyea, here in western(not west) Virginia, i saw several shopping carts with 10 loaves of bread and 5 gallons of milk. guess milk sandwiches really are a thing for power outages.
ReplyDeleteOld-Fart here:
ReplyDeleteI’m beginning to think I’m dumb as a door-nail, I just don’t understand how people, especially parents, see the weather (not uncommon weather) and wait till the last day/hours to “Get something” AKA 10 loaves of bread and 5 gallons of milk, and then cry ohhhhh pity me waiting for someone else to bail them out.
Yes I know, this storm is a HUGE one, but so are a lot of other ones that hit. Remember Dallas a few years back? NO power for what 2-3 weeks? How about the “Great North-East” y’all don’t know that you’re going to get “Bad Weather”?
I’m not saying stock up on $25K of pantry stuff and $50K of “survival Gear”, but how about storing a week’s worth of food N Water (JUST ONE WEEK), having a way to stay warm (NOT freezing to death), I wonder how many households don’t even have a Flashlight?
AND please do not give me that “stuff” about can’t afford it, you JUST went to the store and bought it, so you HAD the money or Credit, KNOWING that a huge storm was coming…. RIGHT!!!!
Ever hear of this.. “Shelter, Security, Water, Food” and yes there are a few more to the list.
SO… A HUGE storm is coming, so what do they do???
1. Leave their Shelter (Home-Apartment-Tent) and go venture out KNOWING that 200 million other are going to do the same.
2. Try to find Water, betting 99.99% of all Water was sold out when they got to the store. You have a way to store 10-20 gallons of water from the Tap, BEFORE the water freezes and stops running?
3. Buy food. Ohhh yeah, look at the photo of the shelves Patrice presented. AND the hundreds of stories of stores being completely sold out (Walmart’s completely empty of food), OR getting 10 loaves of Bread and 5 gallons of Milk. Maybe that was all that was left?
PEOPLE, for crying out loud, ya’ll knew for how long this storm was coming??????
Ok, Rant over, sorry, but give me a break, Put a few things up for crying-out-loud, $5 a week will do a LOT to save yar azz. You don’t have to be a “Prepper or Survivalist” to store up a cpl of weeks food n water…..
This happens every year. But that’s right; the Government will bail ya out.
Ohhhh yeah, the power here want out for a dozen hours last evening, Me n the Dog? We just went outside for a walk and a pee, than tossed a few logs in the wood stove and went to bed, was a GREAT night’s sleep knowing we didn’t have to run to the store for breakfast food and to Starbuck’s for a $15 coffee….
Please be safe out there, and Prayers for those that are in the wakes of all this. Yes I really do feel for those that are or may be in dire straights, but please Please PLEASE make an effort to plan for this sort of thing happening, a LOT worse may be heading our way.
What would you do if the power went out for a month?
