I have very little experience with Facebook, since I refuse to create a page or post anything (I tried once, it didn't work out, and that was the end of my interaction with them.)
But Facebook, it seems, is getting creepier and creepier. I know someone, for instance, who posted a group shot of herself and some friends while they were out on a hike. She did not include any names or anything, just posted a photo. But when the posting went "live," Facebook automatically supplied names to every face without her permission or request.
Eewwww. Creepy.
This morning I saw yet a new reason to never, ever set up a Facebook account. On a forum, one fellow posted this:
"Beware of a new Facebook policy. When you log off for some time or have issues getting on, you now must scan and provide a real ID or they won’t allow you to log on. No way will I send my ID to them."
Is this true? If so ... ewwwww. Creepy indeed.
Faceplant... I don't know what the draw is...
ReplyDeleteI haven't had it happen yet, If I do, I won't be on again. Then again, maybe that's their way of getting rid of conservatives.
ReplyDeleteI have never liked facebook. I "deleted" my account but then needed to get back on to contact someone and Facebook had me identify people in photographs that were on my friend list in order to get back on. That always irked me and made me even more against using the platform.
ReplyDeleteI joined facebook about 10 years ago because one of our friends had joined and she wanted us to join so we could communicate. I used it a few times and then did nothing for about a year and started hearing bad things about it. I saw a tutorial on line somewhere how to get off. It took something like 6 or 7 steps and they then said they would leave me on it for 2 weeks incase I changed my mind. That was not going to happen then and it sure isn't happening now!!!
ReplyDeleteI went on fb and they wanted three pictures of me and three phone numbers.
ReplyDeleteThat is when I decided I don't want to be on there again.
My daughter thought I was hacked but am not sure.
I don't even have three phone numbers!

I didn't have Facebook until I moved to Japan (military), but it is the main way that all the military folks communicate here. It has been extremely convenient here and being able to use the video messenger has been a great way to talk to family back in the States. Once I get back my usage will most likely drop dramatically.
ReplyDeleteWhen my son was in the Air force and in the middle East we communicated through Skype, works great, and not pesky questions to use.
DeleteNever had it, never will. The only tweet I have ever twittered was to birds in my yard. Natokadn
ReplyDeleteThere have been instances where people have been required to show ID yes, usually either due to a hacked account, or due to a belief that the name they're using on FB isn't their legal name (which FB's TOS requires). I haven't personally seen that particular issue, at least yet. I wasn't even required to show anything when I changed my name when I got married. And I know a couple folks who've changed their name on FB more than once without having to show any ID or anything.
ReplyDeleteThe tagging of images thing can be changed in settings, I have all auto tagging turned off on mine.
I'm not saying FB is great, they suck actually, but you can do things to keep it from being as bad.
Privacy is essential to freedom. If one actually believed that he/she would stay off social media.
ReplyDeleteThe same applies to smart phones. Brandon Smith of Montana said it best, "Smart phones are essentially a listening device, video surveillance device and tracking device in your pocket that governments and corporations can exploit anytime they wish”".
As Uncle Remus from the Woodpile Report always reminds us, " Stay away from crowds ". I consider facebook a crowd.
ReplyDeleteGood point. This and Ol' Remus are our top sites. Well, as he would say, 'enough chitchat, time to move on. 73
DeleteIf the service is free, YOU are thee product...
ReplyDeleteRob that is exactly what I tell everyone. I used, then quit, facebook before they went on the stock market. I tell them facebook had only one thing of value and that was the information they were gleaning from their members. They've been selling just that, for billions...
DeleteI am on it just because it is the way I get to see my nieces and nephews and their little children , people who live so far away I would get to see once a year or less, I get a little look into their lives Hear first words ,See first steps ....I am more concerned about the Alexa my husband has installed into our thermostat...that thing is just creepy .
ReplyDeleteParents, who else is looking at and listening to your children on Facebook?
DeleteLifelog, a joint Cia/Darpa project was terminated the same day that the Book of Face began.
ReplyDeleteBoth were exact duplicates of each other. Take that for what you want. Use Duckcuckgo.com to search the terms. Google is Evil and has scrubbed most of the pertainant searches on this subject.
On another subject, Patrice- could you republish your article from last year about the solution you came up with to eradicate the wasps and meat bees? I've searched your blog high and low and just cannot find it.
Thanks.
Sorry, the wasp control is under the heading "Hornets," which I should probably change. Here's the post:

Thank you for the link. I have about 2/3 acre to hand mow, with a power walk behind and the wasps seem to build their nest in the vole holes. I mow over them and they immediately swarm. Hopefully this will keep the buggers from stinging me every 3 weeks.
DeleteOn another note, What are you and Don thinking for a new place? I have a Ziggy's link for several weathered in house designs from $17,000 to just under $50,000. This is for materials only with free shipping within 50 miles.
Add another 35-40% for framing and inside finishes and you're well under $100,000 for a new house on a new piece of property. Add another $40 a foot for a well, $8 a foot for Avista to run power with a $4000 Transformer fee and about $8,000 for a complete 3 bd septic system and you're well under what an existing house would cost you. Just something to consider.
Of course, the price of the project will also include you paying for a foundation but that comes in around $6-8 Sqft. Don is a handy guy and with a plexora of friends, you could possibly frame, rock and mud and install cabinets. Elec and Plumbing depends on friends ability and finding a Elec/Plumbing contractor to sign off for inspections.
Something to think about.

Thanks for all you do.
Jeff
just wondering what is the name of the pretty bird on your opening page
ReplyDeleteCedar waxwings. They're gorgeous.
Delete- Patrice
I have it mostly to post pictures for my family, who is not present. For us, using the call feature when our daughter was in Hong Kong for school was a life and money saver. And it is complicated now, because many organizations have moved their contact operations to Facebook.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I personally have been using it less and less and will probably phase it out within a year or two. It is simply become too much of a minefield.
Remember, no matter how evil and hostile you think facebook is...
ReplyDeleteIt's actually worse than that.
Facebook, purveyor of shade trees and "real fake" dossiers for non-official cover agents ...
ReplyDeleteFacebook, the preferred "private sector" intelligence agency for spooks who have cheap bosses who also prefer computers to people.
HEY NOC, ARE YOU DREADING A BURN NOTICE IN YOUR NEAR FUTURE?
During your next debriefing after a blown op where you couldn't "get black" to save your informant's life no matter how hard you tried, ask for Facebook's "Real Fake NOC Shield" with "Genuine Identity Products" by name!
WHERE YOU GO ALL, WE GO ONE! :-)

Must show an ID to log on? Sounds eerily Chinese to me...
