I mentioned in passing Older Daughter's killer recipe for green beans in oyster sauce she made for Thanksgiving. A reader asked for additional information on it.
Older Daughter got this recipe from her old boss in New Jersey and brought it home to us. I've used it more often with broccoli (my favorite vegetable) and if anything it's even better than with green beans. While I haven't tried it with anything else, I could see it working with things like carrots or Brussels sprouts. In other words, this is a fabulous and easy universal veggie sauce.
Here's the recipe:
• 1 lb. veggie
• Garlic
(Stir-fry these in a couple tablespoons of oil)
Sauce:
• 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
• ½ teaspoon sugar
•1.5 tablespoons water
(mix)
Add oyster sauce mix to vegetable, cover and steam/cook until done.
This is NOT a recipe where you want to add more of the oyster sauce in the mistaken belief it will improve the dish. It's not necessary.
Try it with your favorite vegetable and let me know what you think.
Many thanks for the quick reply. Can't wait to try it. We have to take our pleasures where we can find them these days. Julia
ReplyDeleteDo you have a favorite brand of oyster sauce?
ReplyDeleteYep -- the cheapest. It all tastes the same to me.

I technically used "oyster flavored sauce" this time because it was all my local grocery store had in stock. Still tasted great.

Looks very good Patrice. I will try it soon. Thank you for sharing. Pat
ReplyDeleteAdd some seaseme oil, soy sauce, white vinegar and some fresh ginger. The key with the garlic and ginger is to use a micro plane. It makes the most delicious garlic ginger paste to add to the sauce. Coats everything with yummy flavor.
ReplyDeleteDo you know if this would work with frozen vegetables?
ReplyDeleteSure. Give it a try and let us know how it works.
