A post I hate to put up

It's hard to say goodbye to people, but this is one of those times.

Frank and Fern, writers of the excellent Thoughts From Frank & Fern blog, have put up their final post.

I have a special spot in my heart for this hard-working inspiring couple, though we've never met in person. They wrote to me a few years ago, wanting advice for starting a blog, and I sent them the standard information I send to anyone who asks. Frank and Fern took the advice and ran with it -- and created one of the best durn homesteading blogs on the internet, a blog which recently surpassed a million views.

But they see some ominous clouds on the horizon -- as do all of us who are vigilant -- and have decided to redirect their time, energy, and resources toward finalizing their preps. I can't argue with their decision; I'll just miss the heck out of them.

I can only wish them Godspeed and good luck. Thanks for the wonderful memories, guys.

  1. Really going to miss them myself. I started following them not long after the blog started. I really enjoyed the radio information. Any way to retrieve all that good information and save it?

    1. The blog will stay just as it is, so you can still access all of the information there. Fern

  2. I've said many times that I'd seriously worry (not wait until then to start prepping, but really seriously worry) when Frank and Fern went silent.

OK. It's time to really seriously worry, Scout.

  3. I have been following you for a long time now. I must have missed the invite follow Frank n Fern. I will have to start in the beginning and rad. What worries me, is that it isn't just me that thinks something isn't right.

  4. Good people. Wrote them last year for help with my garden. They directed me to the help I needed. Wish them blessings beyond measure.

  8. Survival Geezer just bowed out of the blogosphere. And I haven't seen anything new from Urban Prepper Chick for half a year.

  10. So sorry to see them go. I've followed them for years. But I also understand why. I think all of us know that something is coming and we need to prepare even harder. Best wishes to them--and all of us.

  11. Had just finished reading Fran and Fern's last post when I clicked on yours "A post I hate to put up". My stomach dropped because I thought you too had decided to direct all your energies to prepping for the future, whatever it holds.
Thank you for being there, I reread your posts also and will continue to reread Frank and Fern's.

  12. Because of Frank and Fern, we have begun the radio adventure. A heartfelt thank you to Frank and Fern.
I understand their decision and had consoled myself at an earlier time when other bloggers began to post less frequently (Enola and OJD) that I would be spending less time communing with kindred spirits, but more time doing the things I had learned from them. It was like my dad was letting go of my bicycle. He knew I could do it, ran along side encouraging, saying, "You are doing it!". DON'T LET GO. Laughing, "Keep peddling, you are doing it all by yourself".
Thank you again, to Frank and Fern.

  13. Because of Frank and Fern, we began the radio adventure. Thank you.
During the last year, Enola, OJD and a couple others, have blogged less frequently or stopped altogether. It shortened my communion with kindred spirits but I filled the time doing more of the things I had learned from their blogs.
With the end of Frank and Fern, I have the same feeling I had as my dad ran alongside my bicycle, words of encouragement telling me I could do it, that I was doing it, showing me that his hand wasn't holding my bicycle up as I traveled the sidewalk. His confident laugh trying to make me happy with my accomplishment. Letting go, so I could join the others in happy freedom and independence.
    Thank you, Frank and Fern.
I will just ride along behind the Lewis's. My training wheels are off, and I'm getting to be a stronger rider every day.
Thanks to my dad, who encouraged me to not only DO but be HAPPY about my accomplishments that allowed him to let go. That's what parents and mentors (of the blog world) do.

  19. This is off the subject. Remember that woman who had two small adopted sons in Alaska and then her husband died and she very sensibly wanted to remarry after her mourning and you helped her to try to find a prepper through your blog? Whatever happened to her? Would she mind an update? Thanks.

  20. Hate to see this - We are in N. Idaho and I have struggled with the idea of doing a blog to help people towards an independent lifestyle. I have a lot of experience and am applying it now. But not sure I want to put myself or my family out there. Seems others feel that way also...
