The colors of November

Around here, October is bright. But while it seems November should be subdued and gloomy, in fact it's quite beautiful. As I told Don, "October is brilliant. November glows." Here are some photos as proof.

In an otherwise cloudy sky...

...a last shaft of sunlight escaped just as the sun set, illuminating a row of trees on the hillside opposite.

The changing color of blackberry leaves contribute to this late-autumn glow.

The leaves transition to yellow and red.

On a distant hillside, where blackberries have taken over vast swathes of land, the leaves are red.

Wild roses also contribute to November's glow.

The rose hips are abundant this year.

Like blackberries, wild roses can take over whole fields.

Water drops amidst the brambles.

Where pine needles meet mossy granite.

The weeping willow in our yard had some bright yellow leaves.

They turned even brighter when the sun came out.

I'm doing some late-season garden cleanup, including trimming back the strawberry runners.

The strawberry leaves, too, contribute to November's glow.

A bit of sunlight broke through the clouds while I was raking leaves.

The sun made the leaves glow.

It made Mr. Darcy glow as well.

This time of year, the leaves have dropped from the wild apple trees, but in many cases the apples are still on the branches.

A sun halo, which by some accounts predicts rain or snow. Accurate (for rain) in this case.

And those are some of the colors of November. A blessed Thanksgiving to all.

  1. Patrice, do you use the wild rose hips as a source of Vitamin C?

    2. My mom always made rose hip jelly. Absolutely delicious. I have no excuse for not making any.

  2. Old-Fart here:
    Thank you for the reminder.

A Homestead, Farm, Ranch, So-on can be so overwhelming at times (most of the time) we often neglect to actually enjoy the wonders around us.

I also know that most don’t have the opportunity or resources to enjoy what you have captured here. Not at a constant pace at best.

Being the Old-Fart I have seen/heard it so many times over and over and over again “I wish I would have ……”

May I suggest that folks take a little time and review where their life’s at, and where their dreams went. If you’re not living your dreams, then maybe something should change, and PLEASE don’t use the excuse that (XYZ) is why I can’t do my dreams, BS. Sorry but BS.
My friends, you only have a short time here on this world, you had BEST follow your dreams while you can. Your life is the conglomerate of choices you, YOU make.

Take a good look at these wonderful images above. Have you stopped your busy running around day to see what’s actually around you? Yes, even in the middle of a huge city with 9 million people around you, there is beautiful life there.

    Remember the famous quote:
“You are only here for a short visit. Don't hurry, don't worry and be sure to smell the flowers along the way.”, most have (as I have) changed that to “stop and smell the roses”.

Try it, you may be surprised at what you see.
With that, Ole-Red and I are going for a quiet walk. When we come to that crossroad in the path, I’m going to let Red make the choice this time. Let’s see where we end up. (wont be the first time we got lost HAHAHA)

Be well folks and have a wonderful Thanksgiving. And remind those you’re with:
    “Stop and Smell the Roses”.

  4. Thanks for so many shots of color this late in the season. Around here we went from brown leaves currying across the lawns with empty trees to everything covered in white. Brown and white with gray skies.

    1. We also got our first snowfall last night. Dog came in a jumped up on the couch next to me and i said oh, it must be snowing since you are all white. We call him our weather dog. Was a late year this year, first frost came late in mid October, first snow fall last night. We are use to first frost no later than early to mid September and first snow can happen anytime after the equinox in September also. Have had it as early as 9/28 and this is the latest we have had it in the 14 years we have lived here. But it is not disappearing yet though we only got around 1/2 inch. Hopefully the snow level stays down so we get snow and not rain because once the snow starts a mixture makes travel so much worse than just rain or just snow. God Bless and and Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!

  5. Lovely photos of where you live. It’s nice knowing that you took the time to notice all the beauty. Darcy is so handsome! Thank you for sharing it with us. Also, wonderful sentiment from “Old-Fart”.
