As I'm fond of saying, it's easy to tell when AI is writing something because it uses a lot of syllables but doesn't actually say anything. Or, as I put it, it's a lot of blah-blah nothing.
Consider this magnificent award-winning photograph entitled "The Guardian" by Sameh Shahien, for example.
Glorious photo, isn't it? But this was the description below: "Beneath the scorching sky, a mother raptor shields her young with unwavering strength — a living fortress. In this rare moment, the bond between parent and offspring is laid bare in pure form: instinct, protection, and unspoken love captured with natural light. Photographed on the coast of Sharm El-Sheikh, South Sinai, Egypt, this image is both a tribute to wild maternal care and a reminder of nature’s silent guardians who watch over the next generation."
Oh puh-lease. This is nothing but a lot of polysyllabic blah-blah nothing. (And remember, AI loves to use the term "unwavering.")
To extract the full extent of the absurdity of the text, read it out loud (as I did to Don). Blah blah blah. What kind of bird is it? Couldn't AI provide basic info like that?
Blah.

I keep reading all the hype people publish about AI, and I understand, I'm not as experienced nor smart as many of them.
ReplyDeleteI don't see it.
I can kinda see potential for it.. but as you say, it's just a word-salad. Its impressive that it was able to come up with that. But it didn't actually do anything. In the end, that's what I think it is, same as all those people you used to work with, who show up every day, have a desk, title, salary, vote, and yet, for the life of you, you can't think of what it is they actually 'do'?
I think that's who it is promoting it. The do-nothings who see paper-shuffling as 'real necessary work'. The office drones (and I use that term deliberately - they too serve a role, but do no actual work).
Thank you for that lesson on AI. Are there other words used by AI like the two you mention to help me as an ignorant person regarding AI. I saw the writing as kind of a poetic description of the bird fulfilling its function of "mothering." You could be a blessing to all of us who don't bother much with it
ReplyDeleteI stumbled upon a great (terrible?) video where AI was being challenged. It was a human asking AI if there was something wrong with a cup he had been gifted, as the top was sealed and the bottom was open (he was simply holding the cup upside-down). AI was so puzzled, it came to the conclusion that it must be a novelty, or prank cup and was completely unusable. The person them proceeded to send a video of him holding the upside-down cup and asked AI again how to solve the problem of the cup being unusable. AI came to the same conclusion, that it was a gag gift and would not be possible to use. KinCA
ReplyDeleteMY thoughts on AI is that it is just ANOTHER TOOL in the dumbing down of the citizens as many of them won't think for themselves anymore, I do NOT like AI in ANY form period!
ReplyDeleteAI is very one or two dimensional. No personal additions, lots of words, facts, no opinions or word choice clues as to who the writer is, their culture, politics, etc. It is very white bread and stale, like reading an encyclopedia. You can tell with YouTube videos because the narrator drones on, doesn't breathe, or have voice inflections, or personal reflections, even if it is a very welcoming, human, nice sounding voice. AI humans on video can look real but soon you notice they blink exactly in the same rhythm and so are all body movements and their speech is repetitive. They say the same thing over and over with slight differences. You start wondering what is the point to all the talking? Close the deal, sell something, or wrap it up!!!
ReplyDeleteSome pastors tried to use it to produce sermons. AI sermons have Scripture, directions, Christian facts, but no personal observations or human application. AI feels empty.
The Matrix movies come to mind then....and sadly....I think of today's younger minds that help produce this stuff and go, "Nope!".
ReplyDeleteTerminator also comes to mind!
