Predicting the weather

This cartoon was created by the talented writer and artist Wren Everett and appeared in the Jan/Feb/Mar 2026 issue of Backwoods Home Magazine (and is reprinted with permission). I thought it was incredibly apropos, considering the storm that hit the eastern two-thirds of America this past weekend.

There's a lot to be said for a prepared lifestyle. Stay warm and safe, everyone!

  1. I get so sick and tired of the idea that back in the day, all Americans were farming yokels*. Since my family immigrated in 1795, we've always lived in New York City. City people are just as if not more American than farmers. Of course, we don't count for the "backwoods" people. *And then we had to get the field crops in lest the locusts eat it and then Ma would bake the bread blah blah blah.

    1. The only thing I can come up with is that Anon @10:41 is a wether guesser. He/she/it certainly has a burr under the saddle for us lowly rural folks. The thing I can’t understand is why Waiste time read this outstanding, long running blog that focuses on rural ideals and morals.

    2. Sounds like you’re very happy living in NYC, anon1041. We are happy you’re living there too.

    3. I think Krab went anonymous. It has all her fingerprints.

    4. Weather is. Miserable people are.

      Does sound like Krab.

    5. Does "Anon" know this site is "Rural" Revolution?

    6. It is me; I just forgot to put my name in. But my point stands. And I'm not miserable, thanks.

    7. Krab...doesn't it bother you that your bitterness comes thru so much in your writing that it identifies who you are?

    8. Right? We're supposed to know them by their fruits not their bitterness.

    9. I'm making a pertinent point. I'm not in the least bitter. Yes, it bugs me that American "old-timey" stuff always assumes that everyone's ancestors were farmers. It's simply not true. It's telling a false story about American history.

    10. Here, learn something. It wasn't all "put the picturesque graniteware coffeepot on, Mom." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prairie_madness

    11. Krab...you missed the point. All of us who have read this blog for years knew it was you. Your bitterness and defensiveness come thru in your writing. We know you. You bought your first home, have one in the Hamptons, have kids, taught yourself to read when you were three, etc. If I was a profiler, I could put together a file of you. My point is, you're among friends, you don't have to be so defensive. Let you're guard down. Enjoy your time on the blog. We learn from each other when we are taught with kindness.

    12. Again, you are ascribing to me emotions I do not feel. Also--what guard? Someone who was defensive wouldn't make the controversial points I make. And what, for heaven's sake, would I be bitter about?

    13. You all are wasting your time. I told Krab before Christmas that I was done poking the bear. I won't give her a platform anymore. I pray for her. Let her speak into the wind. We have better and nicer things to say. Thank you Patrice for the nice neighborhood you have created for us to visit in!

  2. Thanks, Patrice. That was funny. Although I do wish folks could agree to disagree more amicably...

I agree that Americans live in both the cities and in the country (that wasn’t quite the point of the cartoon). I’ll only mention that this site is called “Rural Revolution” and that may skew the audience in a certain direction. I think most of us can agree that being prepared as much as possible is a good thing!

  3. That is clever and funny and IMHO, very accurate! It doesn't matter if you live in the city or the country these days, the weatherman is always predicting doomsday-like scenarios. Goodness, take a chill pill. Be prepared for whatever weather you are likely have in your neck of the woods, and then some, and just sit back and ride it out. Read a book. Look at the pretty snow. Snuggle some grandkids. Etc. :)

    1. The "weathermen" have become threatening vice reporting over the years. I heard our local walmart was emptied last friday. Weathermen have become powerful to the ignorant.
