Since my rash decision to embark on NaNoWriMo this month, I'd like to report that I'm keeping up with my word count -- sometimes barely. (For those unfamiliar with NaNoWriMo, please see this earlier post.)
I'm supposed to put in at least 1667 words per day. So far I've written 10,364 words.
My friend Patty who talked me into this says she's having some trouble keeping up with her word count. (Hey, life interferes. I understand.) But I am so excited by her progress nonetheless. She's had the most wonderful outline for a mystery novel rough-plotted for years, and she's finally making progress on it! Whoo-hoo!
You wanna hear another interesting development? Younger Daughter, who frequently borrows my AlphaSmart to do some writing of her own, has secretly been participating in NaNoWriMo too, trying to keep up with the massive word count!! How cool is that?
On the downside, doing this means I'm getting a little burned out on writing. In addition to my novel, I also have my weekly WND column to write, and I'm trying (trying!) to make progress on my next nonfiction, and since I now have an agent shopping it around I guess I'd better finish the durn thing.
But I gotta admit, diving into this novel is an exciting process. It's something I've been kicking around for years, and to finally start working on it is a fun -- if tiring -- process.
Okay, enough procrastinating. Time to go feed the livestock and then make my word count for the day.
Kudos to you for keeping up the word count! I know it is not easy for a wife and mother, having tried it for two years myself. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed with both you AND younger daughter for taking on this task. Keep up the good work.

PS going camping this week and SP is coming with me.
My wife is doing that also...next year, I may join her. She's concerned about the prospect of losing her present pace when Thanksgiving week rips us away from home and habit to go visit relatives, but so far she's doing really well.
ReplyDeleteAlso, she walked away (temporarily...probably) from a _different_ novel project she's been working on for a couple of months already. Thought it'd be "cheating" to do anything other than start absolutely fresh from zero, first thing upon awakening the morning of November 1st. (I don't hold to that notion, myself...seems almost pharisaical. But I'm not the one doing the writing, so what notions I hold to doesn't count for much. :) )
Either way, good luck to you and the other participants!
Came, saw, tried, not sure what now. I worked on some character diagrams, plot points, how the characters fit together. Got a whole, whopping 569 words done. I found out the hard way that something with a deadline like this is not good for folks with **panic disorder**! (But it is pretty funny)
ReplyDeleteMy biggest problem was, I picked up a handful of books to do some research on writing styles, point of view, etc? Yep, 11/07 and I've read 3.5 books and written one chapter.
great job! I wish I could report being that far along!
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic, Patrice! Thank you so much for letting your readers know about this. My 10 year old daughter is taking the challenge and has 13,047 words so far. She has really enjoyed the experience so far. :-)
